I applied early and got deferred. I have a 3.6 weighted, 3.4 unweighted, and 3.3 HOPE GPA. I got a 1730 on the SAT, 1150 on just math and reading and a 25 on the ACT. I'm taking the SAT again in December. This year I'm taking AP stat, AP Spanish 5, honors anatomy, honors advanced comp, and government. For all of high school, I will have 2 APs, and mostly honors with a few regular classes. I have a lot of extracurriculars. I've been a competitive gymnast for 9 years, I've been on my schools varsity gymnastics team for 3 years, varsity football and competition cheer squad for 2 years, and I'm running track this year. I am also a member of DECA and Spanish honors society. I volunteer for the humane society and I was a cheerleading coach this summer at a kiddy camp. I have worked at the same restaurant for about a year and a half now, starting off as a hostess and now being a waitress. I also do modeling and acting locally, I have an agent and have been in commercials, extra in movies, and was a lead in school safety videos. I am getting a letter of recommendation from my school principal as well.

You are on the bottom end of admitted student stats

Work hard and try to get the SAT score up. Wow, what a lot of EC’s , you sound like a great person. Good Luck on the SAT.

Excellent ECs, but that GPA, SAT score and lack of AP courses will hurt, especially the GPA.

Good luck!

My son was also deferred. I was a little surprised, he has a 34 ACT, made a 750 and a 740 on SAT IIs (English and History) has a 3.7 weighted gpa with honors and 6 AP classes. He made a 4 and two 5s on the AP tests he has taken so far. He has decent EC’s. I suppose the gpa hurt him?

Those are incredible stats. He will definitely get in for regular decision.

We’re anticipating UGA to once again achieve a record freshman profile with higher ACT/SAT sats. Your son did a fantastic job.

hunter what was is unweighted ( UGA ) GPA?

It may help to apply to a less competitive major. You have ok grades, but you’ll need a straw of luck to be accepted.

huntersp5, those are very impressive numbers. I’m surprised your son was denied. My son had similar stats with a slightly higher GPA and was accepted into honors. I’m sure he’ll get into regular decision.

I’m not sure what his UGA gpa is but I would guess it is a 3.4 or 3.5. We are out of state, which I have been told over and over again does not matter. Either way he will be applying regular decision.

Hunter - I’m sure he will get in. Perhaps it has to do with the major he picked? I’m not sure if they look at that or not when deciding on how many to defer. Perhaps it was a popular major and they only let so many in EA.

huntersp5: You may want to get a copy of your son’s transcript and review it, and calculate his GPA based on core courses, with A’s=4, B’s=3, etc. to make sure you are dealing with an accurate idea of his GPA.

UGA doesn’t use anticipated major in admissions decisions, as most schools are junior/senior year schools. This means students will not apply to their particular school within UGA until sophomore year.

My son was also deferred and his high school counselor was very surprised based on others in his high school who have been admitted. Fortunately he got into a “reach” university on early action so he isn’t as upset as he otherwise would have been. His unweighted GPA is 3.6 and weighted is 3.8. SAT I is 2190 and SAT II in U.S. History was 800. He doesn’t have a lot of different ECs but he is very involved with an international youth organization and has served as a regional (multi-state) Vice President for Community Service for the past 2 years and he is currently a peer leader at his high school. We haven’t really tracked the number of community service hours he has but it is easily in the hundreds.

Counselor has offered to call admissions to ask why he was deferred but I am thinking that maybe we will just have him do the part 2 and see what happens.

SnOflake, sorry your son didn’t get in EA but but I am glad he got some good news with the bad. Those are strong stats.

All: Again, I suggest that everyone look at the actual transcripts, and determine a core GPA based on A=4, B=3, etc., then divide the quality points by the total number of grades. many times, a HS will add huge amounts of weight to the GPA on the transcript, but this is not what UGA looks at. For instance, a 3.5 core GPA means that a student has equal numbers of A’s and B’s in their core classes (forget health, PE, etc.). Since grades and rigor have been stated as the most important factors 9not the ACT/SAT), this might be the case for deferral with high test scores.

Thanks, huntersp5. He was really depressed for a few days and worried about his other applications. He fell in love with Athens when he visited over the summer and was very excited about the prospect of going to UGA.

GAdawg - Sn0flake pretty clearly stated that the UW GPA was 3.6, and health and PE cannot account for too much of that since they are usually less credits. I guess UGA had their reasons, but those are pretty strong numbers. And while the test scores might not be as important as UW GPA, it does count for something presumably, and 2190 is a really high score. I think it is quite surprising personally.

Maybe with the poor economy and thus state schools having greater demand (I presume), they are trying to be careful to balance capacity limitations early on.

GAdawg and fallenchemist -PE at his high school is a pass/fail class and does not count toward GPA. He did have 1 C (in an honors class) his freshman year which brought down the GPA somewhat. Rigor may have been a problem, though. While he has mostly honors classes, he only has 2 AP classes. The reason being that AP classes are extremely limited in his high school and they don’t offer IB classes at all. AP classes are only open to Juniors and Seniors and they don’t always hold AP classes that are listed in the course catalogue. For instance, he had wanted to take AP Statistics this year but was told that they would not be holding this class this year so he signed up for Discrete Math instead - he took Pre-Calc last year. The high school is a little better with AP science courses but he is not interested in math and science at all so he just took the college prep level for all of his math and science classes and received nothing lower than a B in these classes.

fallenchemist - I think you may be on to something about greater demand, I know of a lot of kids who are going to less selective colleges than they can get into because they are often offered at least some merit scholarship money. A friend of mine has a daughter who is a freshman at Rutgers. The daughter got into Johns Hopkins but decided on Rutgers because Rutgers offered her Honors College and a full ride scholarship - an offer she couldn’t refuse because her Dad had also just been laid off from his job. UGA is a great bargain in-state and even out of state is not bad especially when you compare the sticker price to that of the private colleges.

Fallen: not trying to be rude in this discussion, just trying to help explain. Many people get a GPA, both W and UW, right off the transcript, but do not actually focus on the grades. Family member in NC thought they had a UW GPA of about 3.7 a few years ago, but in reality it was about a 3.1, as the schools in NC have their own way of doing UW and W GPA’s, but how a college calculates it is very different. Many times it is more helpful to indicate the # of A’s, B’s, etc, so it is more clear to all. Not trying to be difficult, just adding some real numbers to a vague term known as GPA. For instance, with 1 C, I would guess that for a 3.6, a student would need about twice as many A’s as B’s in HS in the other classes. Again, just trying to be helpful.

hey guys i know ur getting tired of people asking for their chances, but it would really be appreciated right now. I have applied regualr decision with a 3.75 weighted gpa and a 3.33 unweighted :(. My SAT is an 1890 M+R 1280. I wll graduate having completed 8 AP classes. I have played football all 4 years and wrestled one year. I was a member of Model UN and took first place in a FBLA region competition. I realize that my gpa is fairl but was hoping the number of APs ould help. Every thought positive or negative would be greatly appreciated
