Chances of getting into UMCP?

Hey guys, I'm a senior this year and UMCP is basically my top choice because I intend to major in Criminology. I was wondering if you guys could tell me what my chances of getting in are?

Gender: Female
Race: Asian
State: Illinois
GPA: 4.0/5.0
SAT I: 1940 (Reading: 670, Math: 640, Writing: 630)
ACT: 31
I volunteer at the local Humane Society. I have volunteered at a retirement home as well as have been a teacher's assistant at a school. (100 hours+)
I have been in fencing club for all 4 years of high school and am currently president.
I won the National Latin Exam Silver Medal Maxima Cum Laude last year.
I am also a writer for the Yearbook this year.

Being from Illinois will give you a leg up from an OOS point of view. The reason why is UMDCP wants diversity and not alot of their students come from there. Being Asian hurts.

Overall, I would say IN. Try taking the ACT or SAT again to bump up the scores which would make you more competitive for Scholars. I would say with your gpa (assuming it 4.0 out of a 5.0 scale) you are on the cusp currently for Scholars. Now if your wgpa is 5.0 out of 5.0, you are def. Scholars, and on the cusp for Honors because your SAT/ACT needs to be higher.

I think you’ll definitely get in. UMD doesn’t look at the writing section of the SAT right? I got a 1300 on the Math/CR and I got into Honors, however, average SAT for Honors is actually about 1400-1450. I was actually shocked I got into it. So I would try to get your score up, like bulletandpima said, though SAT isn’t everything. Your GPA is solid, so if your essays are very good you should definitely be in and could get Scholars or Honors too, especially if you get your SAT/ACT score a little higher.

What kind of course load were you taking? Were you in the “smart people” classes, or did you skate by? Converting your GPA to a 4.0 scale says you have a 3.2 - that’s on the low side of the average for UMD, unless you were taking a full load of AP and honors classes, in which case a 3.2 would be admissable.

Your SAT is right in the ballpark, your ECs are typical of an admitted student. Being from IL is a definite boost! Being a female interested in criminology could also help. I don’t think being asian will “hurt” :stuck_out_tongue:

My guess is that you’re in! Possibly scholars, if you were taking a tough class load and/or had an upward trend.

Hey guys. Thanks for the replies. I took Bio H, World History H and am now taking AP Psych, AP Environmental Studies and AP Calculus.

I think you are in, but probably not likely for Honors . You’re up against people who have taken bunches of AP classes, including AP Physics, Chemistry, etc…considered the “hardest” APs, though your AP Calculus will help. If you took all your high school offered, however, then that gives you a bit of a break. Also, I agree that your SAT scores probably don’t put you in the range for Honors, probably not for Scholars, although your community service will be looked at for that program, too.

Gemstone and Honors Humanities admits (and certainly scholarship recipients) usually have SAT scores in the 700-range. But I have met “regular” honors students with 600-range SATs, including my freshman rooommate :). However, roommate had higher GPA, around 3.5-6.
