Chances of getting into umich

Hi all,
I’m applying to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor this fall with early action, and I was wondering if i’d have a shot at getting in. Also, I live in Texas, so OOS
Here are my credentials:
-3.7 GPA out of 4.0 (top 12%, my school is pretty competitve)
-3 year Varsity tennis player (our school placed top three in the state of texas twice)
-Spend ~20 hours a week planning and organizing events for the youth group at my church
-1560 SAT
-35 ACT
-Had good relations with my teacher and counselor, so I can count on good rec letters
-Had my lit teacher read my essay, he said it was the best he’d read in awhile.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Your test scores are very good which may verify what you said about the competitiveness of your school. So your appeared low GPA may be okay. What is your intended major?

@billcsho I’m planning majoring in biomedical engineering, Chem e, or mech e

3.7 is terrible for out of state. In state, you’d be ok. You’re competing with a lot of people from Texas. If you have exceptional grades in Calc, Chem, Physics, Stats (and hopefully a lot of AP in those subjects) you might stand a chance.

Also…You’d benefit from an EC that shows you have interest in science.

@MaryGJ I in fact have participated in many science based clubs and such, and have taken AP Chem, Physics 1 and 2, Stats, and Calc. Does GPA really carry so much weight that my acceptance will depend on it?

@patchai: Check out Section C7 of the Common Data Set.

For CoE, the admission average GPA has been 3.9 for years. Have you recalculated your uwGPA without subgrades? It may help if you are getting mostly A-.

“Does GPA really carry so much weight that my acceptance will depend on it?” In a word…yes. It is a major deciding factor.

Watching this board over the years, I’ve seen several kids with 34&35 ACT scores and gpa’s under 3.8 turned down. Particularly, from out of state, and from states with stiff competition.

A high ACT and a lower than average gpa can be interpreted as saying…I’m capable of better, but I don’t care enough to push myself for my best outcome. It’s not necessarily a positive.
