I’m a female, white, low income family OOS with a weighted 4.1 GPA. My highest SAT score is a 1380, and I’m taking it one last time this week but I don’t know if it will raise any more (I’ve self studied and raised it that much from my original 1300). I’m applying EA November 1 and if it helps, my older brother also goes to UMich. I know it’s a reach, but what are my chances? I’ve played the same sport all four years, I’m an elected club board member and have been for the past 3 years, I have over 230 volunteer hours from the same place, I’m in spanish honors society, and I’ve had a part time job for the last 2 years. My common app essay will be pretty strong, I think. I took all APs last year except for math and history (4 AP 2 CP) and I’m in 4 APs this year and 1 CP. it was that general balance the first two years also. my other concern is that I come from a very top high school with a ton of smart kids who will also be applying to Michigan…
A few questions:
- What is your high school's record of getting students admitted to UMich, since you're in-state? Do you have Naviance? The enrollment (at UMich) record of your HS I think is critical.
- What is your uwGPA? UMich doesn't use weighted GPA's.
3… What school will you apply to (LSA, CoE, Ross, Nursing, Kinesiology, SMTD, etc)?
Your brother attending UMich may show “demonstrated interest,” which is categorized under the heading of “considered” in the CDS, but not “important.”
The 1,380 puts you at the bottom of the “middle 50%” in terms of SAT scores; however, there were admittances (deferred EA) from the Class of 2023 with SAT scores of 1,360-1,370 area, but their uwGPA’s were 3.9+.
According to U Michigan’s student profile, for the 2019 entering class, the average GPA is 3.9, the mid 50th range of SAT writing is 680-750 and that of the SAT math is 700-790. Your stats do fit into these numbers, therefore, I think that you would have a chance. University profess to evaluate students holistically; essays and LORs are of extreme importance. I am guessing that, like your brother, you would be able to afford Michigan. Will you be applying to Engineering? Don’t be concerned about where the other kids are applying to, as everyone’s application is different and will be assessed differently. Run your own race. Best wishes.
Sorry, somehow I missed that you’re OOS, not in-state, but my Question #1 is still otherwise valid.
BTW, the overall OOS acceptance rate is 19%.
To answer above: my unweighted GPA is a 3.6. (On the lower side, I know) Both my LORs are coming from department chairs, if it matters. Last year my school admitted 10 out of 43 applicants. Regarding my SAT, my last score was a 720 RW, and 660 Math. I’m applying to the LSA college.
For students posting here on CC for the Class of 2023 admissions cycle, your uwGPA and SAT score are both on the lower side of the spectrum. But the students posting on CC are a very small sample size and tend to skew higher than the total population of accepted students (15,000).
Strong essays, EC’s and recommendations will surely help. Also, your OOS HS seems to do fairly well admitting students to UMich (19% OOS overall rate versus your HS’s admit rate of 23%), so that will hopefully help. Best of luck to you!
Demonstrated interest?
So talk to your school and what the avg stats were for those 10 accepted kids. That should give you a benchmark right there for your school. You will be deferred but still apply EA…
You literally need to “A” out senior year with classes that show rigor. I know of someone with same unweighted but much higher Sat score that did just that and got in OOS.
Since you know it’s a long shot have some safeties. Did you visit campus? Talk with professors? Show interests besides applying early
