Chances of getting into UNC/NC State?

Hi,
Currently i’m a high school junior. I’m sorta worried right now since my grades aren’t so great- I have a C in calculus, but I’m expecting A’s in all my other classes. We are only in the middle of the quarter so I have time to raise my calculus grade, but I don’t really have hope. If I get a C in AP calc AB, what are my chances of getting into State?

Right now these are my Stats:

GPA UW: 3.8
GPA W: 4.625

SAT: Just took it october 1, expecting around a 1300-1400, but will retake.

Also, I got a C plus last year in chem- it was paired with AP and it was super difficult - BUT i got straight As the second semester and got my GPA up.

What should I do? And what do you think are my chances at UNC CH or State? Do you think I could get my C up?

My ECs aren’t great but I play Flute, take art and dance, tennis, as well as Key Club, Red Cross Club, Spanish Club and DECA. Plus I volunteer at a youth group to help seniors in my free time.

Are you a NC resident?

@katys0 For NCSU, don’t worry about ECs or letters of rec. NCSU admits on GPA, SAT and class rank. My D got in for class of 2017 with a 1250 ‘old’ SAT, a 4.1 weighted GPA (with 2 Cs in AP classes) and was 52 out of 300-something in her class. She is a NC resident also.

She also applied Early Admission, which I highly recommend. Cutoff is usually Oct 15, but I have heard it was extended this year due to Hurricane Matthew. (This won’t matter to you, as you are a junior).

I don’t attempt to chance students, so I don’t know about UNC Chapel Hill. Usually the only kids from my D’s HS getting in were in the top 10 (total, not %) of their class, and not all of them got in. I got in 1976 and would never be able to today—I’d be headed to NCSU, or UNC-Wilmington or App State, which are very close to NCSU in academics.

But based on my D’s admission to NCSU 4 years ago, I’d guess you have a really good chance in getting in. It will depend on which of the 10 NSCU ‘schools’. My D got into Animal Science. Some are easier, Design and Engineering the hardest. Keep your grades up this year. A ‘C’ in an AP will not doom you.

@TooOld4School Yes, I’m in NC.

You are within the average range at UNC, and will be above at a 1400 new SAT. I think you have an excellent shot as an NC resident. NC State is significantly easier to be admitted to, and in many ways is a better school, so I doubt you’ll have any issues there.

Thank you! @TooOld4School

Also, does your intended major make a difference? @TooOld4School

Your major at NCSU will make a difference. There are about 10 different schools within NCSU to apply to.

Keep up the grades and retake the SAT/ACT as necessary. You will be fine.

NC State accepts about 75% from NC and you are in range. I think you’ll get in there. If you want to major in Engineering they may hesitate a bit with your Cs in science and math. But if you get a C early and then there is an obvious upward trajectory on your grades the rest of the semester you are golden. UNC Chapel Hill will be tougher. Their acceptance rate is half of NC State. Your GPA is solid though and if your SAT is over 1300 I think you have a good shot there too. If you add UNC Charlotte to the list, that is almost 100%. You still have a year. Don’t sweat it. Just be sure to apply early action next October and then you will know a few months earlier if you got it.

Really? Thank you so much!! I’m glad that i have a good chance there…anyway i could improve my app? @cotopaxi
