I'm starting my senior year of high school in the fall, so in about two months I'm going to be to applying to colleges. I was just wondering if anyone who has gotten into UF, goes to UF, or knows the admission standards could tell me if I have a good chance of getting in or not. I have:

-A 4.2 weighted GPA, 3.75 Unweighted GPA (AP's including Calculus, Chemistry, U.S. History, Psychology, Environmental Science, and U.S. Government..the rest honors classes)

-1900 SAT and 27 ACT (So far... I'm going to keep taking them too see if my scores go up)

-Top 10% of my class (number 33 out of about 340)

-200+ Volunteer hours
-Secretary of National Honors Society
-Secretary of Beta Club
-Young Republicans Club
-Leader of Freshman Orientation
-3 year letterman on Varsity Tennis Team
-4 year letterman on Varsity Dance Team
-Job for Junior and Senior years as a Hostess at a restaurant

Are you in state, or out of state?

Stay in the top 10% and get your scores up. It’s a crapshoot with UF You have a shot.

I definitely think you are capable of getting in!

Are you choosing UF because you want to stay in Florida? I think you are very capable of getting into higher ranked schools. In-state students can get into UF easily.

As someone whose just finished going through the application cycle this past year, I’d recommend not applying to “higher ranked” schools unless you are an URM, or can get your SAT score up 250+ points. Save yourself the time and money and apply to UF, and if want to calm your nerves, USF (you hear back very quickly).

ZapadniyRus is right in a way. But it all depends: Are you low income?(If you are a low income individual, scholarships and grants are an option for higher ranked schools, middle class people usually dont get anything, and well, if your wealthy, then dont worry about the money and just apply. And how many more times are you going to take the SAT/ACT? If you get that score up to a 2050 or 2100, your set.

yes, it would definitely help if you are an under-represented minority.

Yes one of the reasons I want to get into UF is because I want to stay in Florida and I don’t want to be too far away from home. I plan on taking the SAT as many times as I need to in order to get at least a 1270 without writing (For the Bright Futures Scholarship.) The only out of state colleges I would even consider are Vanderbilt (which I don’t think I am qualified enough to get into) and Alabama. I am not low income but I am still going to be applying for scholarships.

I am not considering USF, I have no desire to go there. But I am considering UCF as a back up to UF.

Crapshoot? This kid is in…come on guys…FL isn’t that competitive. Though this is the typical applicant (warning: you’ll be just another student here whereas you’d be a superstar elsewhere), I think he has nearly a shoo in.

Haha I am a girl, but thank you! :)

she* that was rather presumptuous.

What a coincidence, I’m gonna apply to Vanderbilt too. I know somebody that got in with a 31 on the ACT…or a 29, sorry, I don’t remember, but her scores weren’t all that great. Although, she had a 3.9 unweighted GPA. Considering that your in the top 10% of your class, you have extremely good chances for those type of schools. Your extracurriculars look fantastic, Just raise your SAT/ACT scores and you’ll be considered a competitive applicant.

Yes, I definitely feel like my test scores are what would hurt me. I have taken the SAT twice and ACT once, so hopefully a few more tries will do the job.

To those who think UF is a shoo-in, think again.

With the economy, increased number of applicants, and financial issues with the state, it’s not so easy.

You need to be well rounded with leadership and high scores (3.7 unweighted, 1300 SAT) to assume you are in.

It’s also a crap shoot as a friend didn’t get in from a top, FL high school, 32 ACT, 4.9 GPA. She didn’t have strong EC’s.

The engineering school is strong. Intel, Google, etc, recruit highly. A friend (and 2 of his buddies) got jobs at Intel this year w/only Bachelors Degree.

UCF is a bit easier and is my safety for next year.

Are you crazy??? My sister is a Junior at UF and in her Freshman orientation, they told them the average GPA in their class was a 4.4. It is second only to Harvard in admissions difficulty. Many kids in Fl with high GPA’s, high test scores, etc do not get in. It is in no way “easy”.

Yes you are correct. UF is hard to get it into. Ask 70% of the students at UCF and FSU they will tell you how hard it is to get in.

UF is one of the most competitive schools in Florida.
Although they do look heavily on GPA and test scores.
They are very holistic.
They also look at your Extra Curriculars.

GL.
I have slightly lower stats then you so hope we both get in :D.
