I would really love to go to U of M in Ann Arbor but I’m paranoid about my chances.
I have 1490 on the new SAT, 31 on the ACT, a weighted GPA of 4.3, unweighted of 3.9. I’ve taken multiple AP classes, getting 4s and 5s on the tests. Extracurriculars include:
National Honor Society Member
Spanish National Honor society member
President of the National Art Honor Society
Tutor with the math club
JV softball for a year
Other volunteer activities such as soup kitchens and church work.
I also had a part time job as an umpire for three years and I currently have a part time job in a bakery for two years+
I am a white, middle class female from Michigan. Does anyone know if my chances are any good?
You have better stats than my dd’s classmate who was offered admission if she wanted to attend elsewhere and transfer in after a year. She was also a white female from MI, with a 30 ACT and no APs, about the same extras, slightly lower GPA than you. So I’d say that’s a good sign.
Your stats are almost identical to my daughter’s. 31 ACT, 3.96 gpa unweighted. Lots of APs with 4 and 5s.
She was accepted by LSA, and is currently a Micro Bio major in her junior year. She loves UMich, loves Ann Arbor, and gushes over their biological resources constantly. She was just at the UMich herbarium a couple weeks ago and kinda wigged out over it’s 1.7 million specimen botanical collection…including extinct species…collected since 1865! LOL.
Good performance in as many of these as possible
AP Calculus
AP Biology
AP Chemistry
AP Physics
AP Statistics
should help you.
If you have a solid transcript and challenged yourself, I think there are very good chances you’ll get in.
if you do?..be sure to check out UROP. Grad schools love research experience, and UMich has gorgeous opportunities.
Another cool thing if you get in? They’re currently in the process of building a brand new $261 million dollar biological science building with atriums, labs with windows you can look into, and dinosaurs. It’ll be like your own little trip to Jurassic Park every day.
If you’re a nature person who worries about living in a city…right off campus there is a fantastic arboretum with wooded hiking trails along the Huron river. (safe with lots of foot traffic, people walking dogs, joggers) At Mathaei Botanical Gardens, you can go spend some time in a rainforest or desert in the middle of winter, feed the big fish, and remember summer. LOL. If you like wildlife, consider living on North Campus. My kiddo lives in a university apartment on North, and has deer, geese, and red tailed hawks in her yard. She’s been carrying peanuts in her backpack and has made friends with a crow who follows her from her bus to her apartment most days. The big fat BOLD squirrels own Ann Arbor. They will mug you:)
