Hello, I'm going to be a senior for the fall of 2013 and I was wondering if someone could help me figure out my chances of getting into U of M.

First off I'm a female, I'm Hispanic, and I'd like to go into the field of biomedical engineering and I live in Michigan.
My ACT composite- 29
Accumulative GPA for my freshmen year was average at only a 3.0.
Sophomore and Junior year I had a straight 4.0 throughout both. My overall unweighted currently is a 3.6.

I have two years of lacrosse (JV)
3 years of Field hockey (2 JV in which my second year I was captain and one varsity)
I dance at a local studio
I am a youth group leader
I also am a link leader on link crew
I am in National Spanish Honor Society
I also have started a writing club within my school.

please help me with any feed back, thank you!

Also a Michigan Alumni (my father)

I would recommend retaking the ACT. Your GPA is impressive (colleges don’t tend to care about freshman year grades as much), and being a legacy will definitely help you.

Good luck! :)

Thank you! I’m taking my ACT again in September and actually studying for it so hopefully ill get above a 30!

The only thing that’s hurting you is the GPA, I know U of M really looks for 3.8+ but not sure if they care too much about freshman grades. You’re in state so as long as you do good on the ACT (esp math for engineering) then I’d say you have a good shot :)

You should get into U of M just fine, but you may be rejected from the College of Engineering.

I have a 29 on my math, don’t I apply for the college of engineering later though?

Not sure how Michigan works. A 29 is generally a little low for engineering, but your gpa is good.

What’s a good math score for it do you know?

I don’t know much about the ACT, but on the SAT, average math scores for good engineering programs are around 750. You can look up a conversion for that to an ACT math section score.

Hopefully being URM, female, and in state may help you get into UMich CoE. Otherwise, your GPA is low and ACT too. The average admission GPA for CoE is 3.9 and 32 for ACT. If you can bring those up to not too far off from average, you should have a better chance.
