Chances of getting into UNLV

I am starting my senior year of high school and septmeber and I have narrowed my college choices down to about 5. My top choice, UNLV, I was wondering what are my chances to get in there.

SAT (old): 1470
ACT: 23
GPA: 2.5

I play soccer competitievly throughout the year, I am apart of the schools TRIO program, I have over 25 hours of community service, I have played basketball for my school, and I took honors English

Can you list the other four colleges you’re applying to? Is your GPA weighted or unweighted? Unfortunately, your GPA would be far lower than the average at UNLV. Also, your old SAT score would be about 200 points below the average, and ACT would be 3 points below. Have you taken any AP classes? Is honors English your only honors class on your transcript. Having more of either of those would make you a more competitive applicant. For soccer and/or basketball, have you been on varsity? I think you should try out the new SAT and see how it works out for you.

I’ll give you my opinion as someone who lives in Vegas and interacts regularly with UNLV students in one way or another. First of all, UNLV literally accepts nearly everyone, and I’m talking EVERYONE. They even have students that are taking their Math 94 class which is pre-algebra. Pre-algebra is 8th grade math. They are accepting students who have the mathematics proficiency of an 8th grader.

Secondly (this is probably the important part of my tirade), UNLV has freshman admission requirements in which only ONE of them is needed to be automatically admitted. I’ll post them from the website.

"Freshman applicants are admissible with either a 3.0 core GPA (calculated based on English, math, social science, and natural science) from the high school transcript, a 1120 SAT score (critical reading and math sections only if taken March 2016 or after) and 1040 if taken prior to March 2016), a 22 ACT composite score, or a Nevada Advanced High School Diploma.

Applicants who meet the criteria will be offered admission to the university; if you do not meet the criteria, you will be offered a position on the Alternate Admit Wait List and asked to submit additional documentation."

You satisfy that requirement with your ACT. Congrats, you’re in. This is for general admission though. I don’t know if you’re going to be accepted into a program like Accounting/Hotel Admin/Engineering, but you’re definitely going to be in the school.

If you’re going to ask questions about a school’s admission requirements, I recommend that you don’t post on college confidential. Most people just repeat the same thing about taking more AP classes and “can you even afford it” and retaking tests and whatnot. Go on the college websites and get real answers instead.

Thank you, I knew about the admissions requirements but I just wanted to make sure. Also, I heard UNLV is more of a commuter school and that it does not really give of the college atmosphere, which is not what I am looking for. I was wondering if you could tell me if that is true or not.

I hear that UNLV isn’t quite a respected school for engineering and such. Don’t know if this will affect your judgment but employers like respected programs significantly more. I also saw that some of the professors there are in a sarcastic way competing for being the worst professor in the school (lol).
