I am a rising senior in high school and want to attend USC's SCA Film & TV program. Here are my credentials:

3.8 GPA

29 on the ACT (going to be taking the test two more times, though)

Will have taken 4 AP courses throughout high school and 1 Honors course

Vast amount of awards/recognition (some being in film and photography) throughout high school

Very knowledgeable about directing and editing since I have made films throughout high school.

Internship (2013 Summer)

Helped out with a professional short film (2013 Summer)

Enrolled in film program (2012 Summer)

Involved in a good amount of extra-curriculars: clubs, community service, sports

I may be forgetting something, but this list is a good starter list.

I am extremely passionate about film and will do whatever it takes for success.

If I have a good application, do you think I have a good chance? What would you say is the most important aspect of the USC's SCA TV & Film application?

I would appreciate any other comments about this program (or even USC's BCA program - Business and Cinematic Arts joint program).

I have looked at a good amount of Visual Samples online from other applicants, and I really haven’t been too impressed. I feel like I am more advanced than many of the other applicants.

I am extremely dedicated and passionate about film. I have watched countless hours of tutorials to advance to the next stage filmmaking. I am planning to work extremely hard on the SCA application as well.

Have you heard anything else about this program?

Directors need to know how to write. I suspect the essay will play an especially crucial role. Start now so it’s crisp and tight and shows passion with a unique voice. GL

3.8 UW GPA + 29 ACT + <20% Admit Rate = Reach. Not out of the question but nothing to get too comfortable about either.

Portfolio admits need to be ‘in the ballpark’ statistically, you match that criteria; so a great deal is going to ride on that arts submission. Hopefully the SCA staff will feel as strongly about your submission as you do.

My son is in the BCA program. The program is run out of the Marshall School of Business. After being accepted to USC and the Marshall school you then apply to the BCA program. A maximum of fifty students start in the cohort as freshman a number leave over the years. My son wanted business first then cinematic arts; the program certainly provides that approach - internships will be oriented toward the business side of movie/TV making. His perception is that the BCAs who are ‘artsy’ tend to get frustrated with all the b-school classes.

You really need to have a good portfolio. A friend of mine that got in there had grades that were not a good as yours but she had some really good shorts she made, it really depends on that. Especially the quality of the writing/directing. Chance back please!
