Chances of getting into UVA or W&M

I am currently a freshman at George Mason University and have a GPA of around 3.1-3.3 and was wondering if I have a good chance of getting into either the University of Va or W&M if I apply for Fall 2008? Should I wait one year and apply for Fall 2009? I had a 4.0 in high school and got a 2040 on the SAT (720 cr, 660 math, 660 writ). I am also a Va resident and I am a minority student. I participated in only a few extracirriculars in high school every year and only had about 40 hours of community service in my junior and senior years. I also haven't done any extracirriculars at GMU but will join some clubs in the spring although I don't know if that will really help or not. I probably should have applied during high school, but wanted to go to gmu because it was close to home and many of my friends were going there. I didn't really study hard at all this first semester which is why my gpa is kind of low, but I will focus on school work next semester and will definitely get straight A's. I also looked on W&M's transfer admission site and all my courses that I have taken are their recommended courses and are considered rigorous. So do you think I have a chance of getting in if I get straight A's next semester? Thank you for the advice.

Also, I am planning on majoring in either accounting or finance and U.S. News ranks Va. tech's business program higher than W&M's by a few spots, but businessweek ranks W&M's program much higher than Va. Tech's. Does anyone have any advice on deciding on which one to go to? Of course UVA's program is the best, but I also don't have as high of a chance of getting into that school so I just realized that I probably should focus on W&M and Va. tech.

I am excited to see somebody who mirrors my situation so much.I completely know where you are coming from. I am just finishing up the process of withdrawing from George Mason and will be at William and Mary next semester. Having just been accepted from the same school I can tell you it's completely possible. What exactly is your minority status? William and Mary has a high admission rate for transfers (~55%), but the fact that you are a freshman means that your High School record will be weighed heavily. Can you provide me with a better idea of how hard your high school courses were (AP's/IB's/rank)?

I am an African American and I only took AP U.S. History and AP U.S. Government, but those were the only AP courses available because I went to a private school. I got a 4 and a 3 on the AP exams, but I doubt that is taken into consideration.

I too am Black, I transferred with a 3.3. I don't know if you are male or female,it makes a bit of a difference as there are so many more females applying at a given time. If you are serious about transferring next semester then they will definitely be looking at your high school record. I am transferring after a year and a half. For the most part there are techniques that can be used to help separate yourself from the pack when applying. I would say that you have a good chance at William and Mary, especially if you are actually able to get straight A's next semester. My GPA appears worse than it actually is because outside of biology I had around a 3.75 (Bio was four credits a semester and I got a C and a C+). If you are able to get your GPA up above 3.6 I can pretty much assure you that you will be accepted.

There is no comparison between W&M and Tech. W&M is one of the best and most respected schools in the country.

Agreed with the poster who says there is ZERO comparison between WM and Tech.

Also it is much much easier to get in to WM as a minority. You should be fine.

Thanks for all the advice and comments everyone. I thought WM was a lot better than tech.

Apply to UVA, they are very friendly to VA residents. Do well on the essays, send in mid-year grade report (they dont ask for them so they'll be unofficial, but whatever, I did)

Your college GPA is way, way too low for acceptance as a transfer student to William and Mary or UVA regardless of being black.

pedsox just is not correct. Flat out wrong. Completely and utterly wrong. You are going to need to show yourself as well rounded, but it is totally possible. May I repeat, pedsox is just being overly negative. You have a good shot.

Well, I should say that he's probably not going to land at William and Mary.

Just sayin...............GPA is too low. Prove me wrong.

Besto of luck.

I got into William and Mary with pretty much the same GPA, from the same University.

I seriously doubt it rcmiller. Do you play football?

Peace out.

His GPA is way, way too low to be considered as a transfer student to W&M. And if your own GPA is that low................shame! Don't come here............there won't be anything to talk about.

No, I don't play football. And the above post is composed mainly of nonsense that comes from not having anything to say when you have been shown to be wrong. His GPA is not too low. W&M isn't some ivory tower that is unreachable. I think members of the Tribe would like to feel their school is the most difficult to get into of all time, but the honest truth is that it just isn't. And race isn't the issue, because I know a white female who transferred there from VCU with a 3.2. Personally, I do not care if you "seriously doubt it", I wasn't directing my comments toward you anyway. I was merely talking to the OP and telling him that it was completely possible to transfer to W&M and providing him evidence that it is. Sorry, that I had to be the counter to your foolishly negative post, but it was needed, as you simply were misinformed on the topic.

To sum up my meaning. The OP has a good shot of being accepted and should certainly apply.
