Chances of Getting into UVA?

Hey guys, so I just submitted my application for UVA EA and I'm freaking out because I don't think I'll get in. I attended Miss Porter's School for my freshman and sophomore year and had a cumulative GPA of a 3.2 (3.3 by my current High School's way of calculating GPA). I transferred to a private school in Jacksonville, FL and had a 4.0 for my Junior year and, it appears, will have a similar GPA this semester.

I got a 2040 on my first SAT, which has only gone up to a 2050 as of October 11th and a 30 on the ACT. Last year, I took AP US History and AP Language and Composition and got 4s on both; I'm taking 3 APs and one Honors course this year. I think my recommendations and essays are the best parts of my appliation, but I'm very concerned about my SAT score and, obviously, my GPA. My previous school was highly competitive and my fear is that they won't consider that and will only see my cumulative GPA of a 3.5. Additionally, I haven't taken any SAT Subject Tests (which are strongly recommended) and since my SAT score wasn't as high as I had hoped it would be, my prospects of getting in as a Florida resident seem pretty dim.

If possible, could someone with knowledge about UVA just let me know what my chances are? I'm also applying to University of Richmond, Bryn Mawr, Northeastern, Connecticut College, William and Mary, Bucknell, and possibly Johns Hopkins, so I'm not sure if I have enough (if any) safeties. Please help! :(

Edit: My SAT breakdown was 630 for Math, 690 for Critical Reading, & 730 (with a 10 for the essay) for Writing. I am planning to major in East Asian Studies, but I fear that the math score will still be a problem.

Even with your uptrend GPA, your chance at UVa is REALLY low because your GPA is really low, your SAT math is slightly above lower 25%, and you being OOS will set the bar even higher. Also, admission office will think of you as a lazy person for not taking SAT IIs. What’s your weighted GPA?

It will be hard for NE university as well. and much worse at the other schools. Do you need financial aid?

On the same note, I really don’t think you have any true safeties which is something you should think about. Almost all of the acceptance rates of the schools you mentioned are at or below the 32 percent. Even with the ones that have higher acceptance rates, such as Northeastern or University or Richmond, I highly recommend selecting more match and safety schools in your situation.

While hopefully schools notice the difference in schools and your upward trend, you shouldn’t count on it. Therefore, you should make sure you do have safeties by the time RD rolls around. Safeties are schools you are almost certain you will get into and you know that are affordable. With the uncertainty factor of the GPA making things such as merit scholarships difficult to determine, find some instate public schools you like and apply there. Florida is lucky enough to have a vast public education system with great options. Alternatively, you could scout out schools that may give you merit for your stats, which there are some links to in the FA forum.

Good luck.

What safties should I consider, given the information I’ve provided? Starting to really worry about this now, especially since I was hoping to go to college in the north…

Both Bucknell and University of Richmond offer ED2 (binding) with a submission deadline of 1/15. By then you will have heard from UVA - if the news isn’t good you could apply to one of these two schools ED2 which will certainly improve your odds vs the RD round. Neither requires/requests SAT2 tests. Of course you need to feel totally confident that Bucknell/Richmond is your first choice school and your stats must be competitive. Also assuming that financial aid is not an issue.

Wow, I just checked the EA notification date for UVA and it appears to be 1/31. I never heard of such a late date for EA - I guess my suggestion of ED2 at Bucknell/Richmond won’t work with the UVA timeline… Sorry!
