Chances of getting Kenyon, Oberlin, and the University of Michigan

(Primarily looking for feedback on Kenyon but also curious about Oberlin and UofM)

I’m white, a female, and a senior in Michigan.

Intended Major: English

Unweighted GPA: 3.8

Weighted GPA: 4.0

AP Classes So Far: APUSH(4), World, Psych

AP Classes Senior Year: Bio, English(Lit and Lang), and Gov’t (plan on AP testing for all 4).

Have taken honors courses since Freshman year except for math. Will be taking Spanish 4 senior year along with Symphony Band (the highest-level ensemble in the school for sophomores-seniors…got in my sophomore year).

Rank: 15/419

ACT Score: 29; English: 32 Reading: 34 Science: 26 Math: 22

EC’s:

  • co-founded the school’s debate club junior year (possible co-presidency senior year)
  • Interact Club member since sophomore year
  • Spanish Club member since sophomore year
  • NHS since junior year
  • Marching Band since freshman year (squad leader and section leader)

Have volunteered for the Salvation Army, my town’s museum and library, Crop Walk, and festivals held at the elementary schools in my school district. I was also the Captain for the Foreign Languages Team at this past year’s Relay for Life and was a tutor every Thursday for underclassmen in need of ACT prep help and essay help my junior year. For my school’s band program, I also volunteered at the concessions for the UofM football games.

Interesting tidbit (don’t know if this should be included or not): I got to perform at Carnegie Hall this past year with my symphony band. I had a solo and my ensemble world-premiered a piece and won gold!

With all of that being said, what are my chances of getting into Kenyon, primarily, but also Oberlin and UofM?

Thanks!

It would be a low reach to high match for you applying to UMich LSA from in state with GPA 3.8 (below admission average of 3.85) and ACT 29 (below 25th percentile of 30).

Kenyon and Oberlin are low reaches. Your math ACT will hurt and if it were better you’d be more of a match. If there was any way to get that up a bit it would be a huge help.

One thing about both Kenyon and Oberlin is that their admissions are truly holistic and thus not as predictable as many schools.

billcsho- yeah my unweighted is a 3.8519 (guess I should’ve included the whole thing). Nevertheless, it’d still be quite a shot in the dark, eh?

Troyus- I do plan on retaking the ACT this September. That should be early enough for me to still send my scores before Early Decision and Early Action. I’m going to focus a lot of time on math…looking to bring it up to a 25 which would give me a superscore of a 30.

Give it a try. UMich does not superscore ACT. You may try SAT too as someone do better in one test than the other.

Or take the math sat2 to show a better score? With those other scores, I’ll bet you can improve math!!

All a bit of a reach, but if you nudge that math up…it would help a lot.

Good luck!
