Chances of getting rejected at all Ivys

My son is a junior and wants to go ivy or ivy like (MIT, Stanford)

I put his stats below- and as you can see, his SATs, GPA, etc. are in the 'ranges' for these schools.

However, I understand that he needs something extra to make him stand out. Unfortunately, he really doesn't.

So, his plan (right now) is to apply to 5 or 6 and he figures that chances are he will get into one of them...I am not so sure... Your thoughts?

...he passes up many opportunities such as Governors school because of summer baseball..

at any rate, I guess it is possible to have the 'stats' he has and get rejected by all the top schools, hu?

Yep.

Sorry all. I am new at this…are you saying that yep he will probably get rejected by all since he lacks something ‘special’

No, he’s saying yep most likely because no one is guaranteed acceptance into any ivy league school. He’s got a really good chance of getting into one of them for sure, and I would recommend he join a club/sport that interests him and have him take it to the next level, somehow. Ivy leagues love to see devotion as well as diversity, and the easiest way to do that is to focus in on a club, while maintaining a low-profile persona in other clubs and taking diverse classes.

I’m answering your question. Yep, it’s possible that he will be rejected by them all.

Thing is that he wont be, unless he is lame about his essays. If they aren’t compelling, he won’t get in. Don’t worry about Governors school, it’s obvious your kid has passions that are spread.

Just make sure he ends junior year strong. What does he want to major in?

Thanks…ahh diverse classes. His classes are really all math and science. That’s gonna hurt him…thanks again!

Engineering…

So far he seems like a good candidate for Cornell and a big reach for MIT and Stanford. Those are the 3 best engineering schools in your query, and two of them (MIT and Stanford). are the top two in the united states/world (Idk about Cambridge’s standing here).

Can you encourage him into joining an engineering group, competition, project, or internship?

And take this all with a salt tablet. He’s only a junior. A lot can happen in the time between now and when he applies.

For whatever reason he isn’t big on Cornell. Actually, he really likes Penn. We visited twice.

I will encourage him to join but it may be too late…
