Chances of getting to UCSD!

Hey guys, I've been reading a lot from this forum and I just signed up for it

GPA.(Unw) 3.71
GPA.(w) 4.0

11th Grade courses

IB Bio--- A
IB French ---A
English III---A
Physics---A
Algebra II---C (the only c :((( our math teacher was very strict)
US history ---A
Life Drawing (College course) ---A

i did terrible on ACT --- 22! :(
But that was without studying a word! (i transferred from london after my 9th grade so until i got to know what i have to do for college it was time to take the test)
But im doing my best... im horrible at taking exams but i can get my ACT to a 26

I've worked for pasadena art district galleries
I've shadowed a dentist for a year
I've done a lot of art competitions and have good recommendation letters + about 70 hours of community service...

Im trying to get to UCSD pre-med Human Biology...
I think my GPA is good but due to the test scores I have i doubt i can get in!

If anyone can give me some advice or give me a good percentage on getting into the college it would helpful :)

Thanks

I think your only major fault is the 22. Bump that up to 28 and you should be good to go!

Hey!
So I’m actually going to UCSD as a Human Bio major :)

I’m sure you know but at UCSD, all of the Biology majors are impacted which means that a lot of students apply for the major and not everyone can get in.

Do you know your UC GPA? The UC’s will look at that. Your weighted is a little bit low but your unweighted is average. If you can raise your ACT, definitely try to! Try to raise it to at least in the high 20’s and you’ll have a greater chance. Have you tried the SAT? Maybe it’s better for you.

Have you taken any SAT II’s? For the Bio department, they STRONGLY recommend the SAT II Math and one SAT II science.

UC’s don’t accept rec letters so they won’t help in this situation

When you apply, you put in your 1st and 2nd choice major. Put your Human Bio as 1st and choose another major not in the Bio department. Even if you don’t enter the Bio department at first, you can also petition to reenter the Bio department later in your 2nd year.

ESSAYS. THEY WILL BE IMPORTANT :)

If you want more info or help, you can definitely PM me
GOOD LUCK

Hey thanks for the great info

I’ll try raising my GPA by taking 3-4 AP classes next year
I did terribly bad on SAT (about 1400)

I signed up for SAT II Math2 and BIO and U.S. History

 • Im gonna take ACT again on september 8th!

Im doing my best to get to UCSD, Its like the school I really wanne go to!
And Human Biology is just my thing!

I’ve already took IB Bio, but one question, you think I should take AP bio next year?? cause thats pretty easy for me and i can get a good A on it…

Next year courses will be:
AP Chem
AP Bio
AP Eng
H pre-cal
Econ/Gov.

AnD what do you think I should put for my second major??

Thank you again :)

Actually, I’m sure you know that UC’s only look up your GPA until your junior year. Senior year GPA doesn’t factor in at all. Only the classes you’re taking is all they see. So your GPA is pretty much set now.

That doesn’t mean to not study hard during your senior year. Still do! You don’t want them to rescind you and stuff.

Definitely, work on your ACT and SAT II tests and get them as high as possible. The Bio department will look at those more closely then other departments.

I wouldn’t take AP Bio since you already took IB Bio. I don’t have IB at my school so I’m not sure how hard it is, so I only took the AP classes.

The 2nd major is really your choice. Choose a major that you’re semi interested in.

Bump up your ACT to 28 or 29. Buy practice books and be sure to take plenty of practice tests.

Good Luck! (:

Are you in or out of stat (do you live in California)? If not, that alone hurts your chances. If you are in CA, I’d advise that you try and get at least a 28 on your ACT; you may be able to squeak by with a 27. If you are OOS, get at least a 30.

I am a cali resident and u.s. citizen… so i guess that wouldnt be problemmm

i just did my 5th through 9th grade in london …

Oh ok then… i’ll try to ace those tests anyways… :)

I doubt i would have a problem on SAT II Bio, its just the SAT I that I dont do well on… :frowning:
and second major, you think Genetics is good???
