Hi, I'm going to be a senior in the fall and I am thinking about applying Early Decision to Tufts. I am wondering if I have much of a chance of getting accepted. I have a 3.3 GPA for junior year (including electives like band and animation), on the SAT reasoning test I got a 710 on Math, 690 reading, and 650 writing (10 on the essay, kinda messed up the multiple choice :(). For the SAT2 Math IIc I got a 690/680 (not very happy about that score since the test wasn't that hard). I am gonna take the chemistry SAT2 in the fall. I play baseball every year for my high school, I am the Tuba player for the concert band, I have tutored kids and done community service at a hospital (106 total hours). I took 2 AP courses junior year (math and spanish) and senior year I will be taking 4 APs (math BC, spanish, physics C, US Gov).
What do you guys think? I am thinking about retaking the SAT reasoning but I'm scared that I might do something dumb and get a lower score. Also should I go do an interview, tour etc? And should I get a college coach person?

and what other colleges in new england (best if in MA) would be good matches, reaches, and safeties for me? I might do pre-med (if possible) and i am interested in biology and other sciences

So what exactly do you want to major in or area of focus?

not completely certain yet, my parents want me to do premed, biology, physics and engineering are possiblities for me

Your chances look on the mediocre side due to your low GPA (unless weighted it is much higher). However, I wish you the best of luck!

well my high school doesnt weigh gpas
if i add +.5 for honors classes and 1 for APs its about a 3.7

can anyone tell me what my chances are? the academic gpa weighted would be like 3.7. and should i retake the sat1s?

If you think you can do better on the writing section, I'd try. I think they take the highest comined from all sittings, so I don't think it matters as much as long asyou get your target raised. However, this does not mean to blow off math and verbal for the sake of increasing your writing score :)

Your scores as of now will be average for the ED applicant pool. Doesn't hurt to try again if you haven't excessively taken the SAT.

If you live in massachusetts, what about some of the umasses?
also, good mcas scores=free tuition to MA state schools. but i don't know if you are from MA or not, so...
umm...i haven't researched a lot of MA "match/safety" schools yet, for me at least. what about stonehill? my friends tell me to look at that when we are discussing college.

Might look at Holy Cross-1 hour from Boston, very good LAC with very strong pre-med program. HC is a smaller school than Tufts but the Division 1 sports program gives HC a stronger school spirit. Also, Holy Cross rendered SAT's optional this year.

ok so i guess ill take the sat1s again in nov and rush my scores to make the Early decision 2 deadline.. if i take it in november and rush my scores will i make it in time for the 1/1 deadline? and is there any difference between applying ED1 or ED2?

mm, I don't think so. The november deadline may be too late, but you might want to talk to the admissions office just in case. There is no statistical difference between EDI and EDII other than that EDII gives you the advantage of your first semester senior grades if your GPA previously has been lacking.

na im saying if i retake the sat1s in early november, will i have enough time to make the ED2 date (Jan. 1st)
If i decide to do premed, do i have to tell them at the time of application? sorry im so confused, but im the first person in my family to go to college

do you recommend that i get a college counselor to help with my essay and stuff?

No you don't have to tell them that you're going to be premed. You can apply as undecided if you wish - there are no impacted majors at Tufts. Even if you took the SATs in December you could make it in time for the EDII deadline. Do note that you are a first generation college student as this will help you greatly. On the college counselor business, I could help you out on your essay and the profiling of your extra-curriculars. No need to spend the money, I'd be willing to do it for free. Just email me with the particulars kng01@tufts.edu :)

Admissions people would consider the fact that I am a first generation college student? Also what would you like me to send you? I don't want to send anything too personal online. Do you attend Tufts or work there?

Yes they will. I am currently a rising junior and I have a pretty firm grasp on Tufts admissions. Just send me whatever you would like for me to look over, essays, teacher rec suggestions, how to list out your extra-curriculars etc.

For pre-med, my reccomendations area:

Wellesley (pre-med, excellent, and they are great in getting you to medical school, they bring the schools there to you, my sister is going to have a scholarship to WUSTL's medical school thanks to Wellesley)
Tufts
UMassAmherst
Simmons
Holy Cross

Is wellesley really hard to get into? Also I've heard that holy cross is kinda like insanely religious and uniform/bland
snuff i might send you some stuff after i have it done

Sure, no problem.

Holy Cross is Jesuit like Gtown and Fordham. The school is actively seeking diversity as other selective LAC's do.
