Hi! I am very interested in going to Cal Poly and it is definitely my first choice at the time, however I’m having trouble picking a major that would suite me best. Of all of them I found Kinesiology the best fit but I have heard that it is very hard to get into! What do you think my chances are in getting into this major?

I’m currently a junior and my GPA is 3.93
I’ve only taken the SAT once and got an 1810, but I am planning on taking it two more times
Math SAT: 630
English SAT: 580
Reading SAT: 600
I know that these scores need to be improved and I will definitely do that before I apply for any colleges.

Will you guys please let me know what my chances are for this major? I have also heard that you can apply for a major in the same department (Science and Math) and you can transfer into a different major if it is in the same college. Is this true?

Also, what are the chances of me getting into Biological Sciences?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

My daughter is a freshman in Kinesiology and, you’re right–they told us at last year’s Admitted Students’ Day that it *is *hard to get into. They don’t admit a lot of kids to the department. You might consider taking the ACT. Cal Poly prefers it, actually. My daughter did better on that than she did the SAT. Her ACT was 30. She didn’t even send in her SAT scores. Her Cal Poly and UC GPA was 4.27 and her non-weighted h.s GPA was 3.97. Weighted was 4.175. Is your GPA non-weighted or weighted?

My advice is to take the ACT and take it a few times if you’re not satisfied with your initial score. Cal Poly also looks at your freshman grades, as well as Algebra 1 in 8th grade or if you’ve had more foreign language in middle school. They also want you to meet the criteria for different subjects like the UCs do with a-g requirements.

They say it’s easier to switch majors within a college or department, however they have some hoops you’ll need to jump through. But, others have done it. They have close to a 30% rate for changing majors. They want you to graduate in 4 years, if possible. Jumping from one major to another doesn’t help.

I can’t tell you about Biological Sciences and what their criteria is for admission. I would just say to work hard to bring up your GPA, take the required courses and do well on the ACT. Best wishes to you!

I got wait listed at Cal Poly for Kinesiology this year, and I will know around May 15th if I am accepted or not.

Weighted GPA: 4.31
Unweighted: 3.95
SAT-Math: 660
Reading: 700
Writing: 670

I am also the athletic trainer at my school for three of the sports teams in the fall and one in the winter, which is in line with this major.

I suggest that if you really want to attend Cal Poly because of the school rather than the major, you should enter under biological sciences. You will not be able to transfer to kinesiology, however, because it is a very impacted major and they do not allow transfer students. Make sure you also look on the website for the requirements and selection criteria for the major you would like to apply under.
I hope this helps!

Toast - My D just had a sophomore friend that transfered this qtr from Business to Kinesiology. It is possible as long as you have good grades and a little luck of someone dropping out of the major.
