Eh, I'm not sure whether I fulfill the requirements of even having a chance of getting into UT's engineering program. First of all I am a resident of Texas, and I am ranked 30/518. That is top 6%. Also on my SAT, I got a 1750, which is broken down into a 670-Math, 530-Reading, and 550- Writing. My GPA is 3.69/4, kinda low due to the fact of the AP classes I have taken. Math Classes that I have taken: Geometry PreAP, Algebra II PreAP, PreCal PreAp, and Calculus AB(current). All pre-ap/AP english classes. Also I have taken Bio PreAP, Chem PreAP, Physics PreAP, Chem II AP, Bio II AP, and environmental science AP. I have other pre ap/ AP classes, though I think engineering would look at more along the basis of math and science related classes. I am apart of many organizations such as National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, Distributive Education Clubs of America, and Math Honor Society. Also, I have taken 3 years of spanish, and I have quite alot of volunteering experience. I just listed out everything, so you guys can get a better grasp of where I am coming from. I am interested in biomedical and chemical engineering! Let me know what you guys think my chances are! thank you!

Hey, welcome to CC!

A lot of these chances threads are popping up now and lately I’ve leaned towards telling the poster that the admissions process is undergoing changes so we can’t do a good job predicting chances accurately. But unfortunately in your case I can tell you that you will most likely not make the cut for either of those majors. While it’s good that you’ve found majors that you like, you should know that BME and ChE are considered two of the hardest majors on campus. Historically, BME has taken only the top 1-2% of students with an average SAT easily over 2150.

Honestly, a 670 math score is relatively discouraging for any engineering major. However, if engineering is truly your passion then you can still transfer in to any engineering major after your first semester at UT with the exception of BME which only takes Fall admits.

You’ll need a decent GPA but each major has it’s own cutoffs that vary with each semester. They can be found here.

so I really don’t have a shot at any of the engineering majors? what about my secondary major of going into McCombs?

I can only answer with certainty for those two majors because I have personal experience with friends who got rejected despite having a stronger application. You should definitely still apply as in the end my speculations are only speculations. As I said, the admissions process has changed, arguably to your advantage.

You may have a shot at other engineering majors but I would still recommend that you seriously consider a back up plan in case you do not get admitted for next Fall. For example, internally transferring in to the major is a perfectly sensible back up plan.

thank you for your expertise!

no problem! Stick around and keep us updated on your application
