Chances of me getting into Johns Hopkins University?

Just wondering if anyone can tell me if I have a chance at getting into Johns Hopkins University with pretty low stats.

SAT- I did not send one in because of the test optional policy this year.
GPA- 3.83 weighted

Extracurricular-
Swim team (captain for two years) - 4 years
NHS- 2 years
Volunteer work through the school and outside the school- 4 years
Spanish club- 4 years
Business club- 4 years
Student council- 4 years

I also applied early decision and applied for the biology major!

Hi,

Im going to give you the raw truth here and you may not like it but I think this is what you would want. I really don’t think you will get into Johns Hopkins. Since your gpa is low and your not sending your SAT or ACT scores, you really have to rely on your ECs and your essay. To be honest, your extra curriculars aren’t bad but they are just average. Especially since you didn’t win any state or national awards and aren’t anything too special. I would give you around a 5% chance at best.

I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks for being honest!! I’m also taking AP Lang, AP bio, AP psych, and Uconn english. Do you think that will help me at all?

I think it might help a bit, but you have to realize that almost everyone who apply there took insanely rigourous courses. I don’t know how well your essay was, but your essay can also have a large impact.

Ok thank you! I understand that it is quite the reach for me hahah! My essay was about a near death experience I had as well as being diagnosed with a rare bone disease and how I moved past it in my life and how my entire outlook on life changed after that. Along those lines though!

Yea I think your essay is pretty good, but im not sure it would be enough to carry you tho. For a point of reference, the average person who got into Johns Hopkins at my high school was 1500 SAT and 4.4 GPA. Btw not getting into Johns Hopkins isn’t the end of the world, there are plenty of good colleges that would be a great fit for you. I hope you the best of luck tho!

I have some questions…

What were the courses with your lowest grades?

What area of the US are you from?

Did you only put the activities listed above in the CA activity section or were there more? If so, what were they?

Legacy?

Gen1?

URM?

What kind of high school?

Thanks,

Lil Shortay

Hi!!
The courses with my lowest grades were probably pre calculus but nothing lower than a B+ and this year I have been struggling with AP bio but it is the second hardest course you can take at my school, but again nothing lower than a B!

I am from New England and live in Connecticut.

None of my family members attended Johns Hopkins.

Both my parent’s attended college!

I am white.

I attend a public high school.

Are you taking or have you taken calc?

Unfortunately, I am not! It would not fit in my schedule and I had to either choose AP psych or calc and I chose psych.

Okay, I doubt you’ll get in then. You really needed to take that calc class, especially if you applied as a biology major. If Johns Hopkins is your first choice, and you really want to go there, this is what I’d do:

I’d take a gap year and take a full year of calc at a community college or accredited online college, then reapply with this course in tow. That class is just that important.

Or, I’d try to transfer in from somewhere else after taking calculus freshman year.

What AP science classes have you taken so far?

AP Bio and AP psych. I am also taking anatomy right now. Do you think their is any chance that I can get in even without the calc?

Unfortunately, I do not. If you take a gap or try to transfer in, I’d also take a college physics and college chem course along with the calc.

How many AP courses have you taken in total? (that includes humanities APs)

4 APs

@cats999 what other colleges are you applying to?

They are going to want to see more, imo.

I think if you fix that stuff I mentioned above by working your butt off all next year, then apply again, I think you could make it in. It depends how badly you want this school. But, yeah, I think they are gonna wanna see that rigor stuff or they’ll wonder if you’re ready for their prerequisites and bio major requirements. You can do this! Besides, who cares when you get in as long as you do get in and graduate. A year really isn’t that big a deal in the grand scheme of life. Plus, this whole Covid thing sucks A and waiting a year might be a good thing considering all the online crap, the bad Zoom teaching, and the fact that you’re paying out the A for all that horrifying mess. If it were me, and this was my dream school, I’d just try to get there, however possible.

My daughter didn’t get in two years ago, 4.2 W GPA, all honors plus 9 AP classes (4’s and 5’s), 34 ACT, 4 honor societies, county athletic scholar, 2 varsity sports, captain, officer in 4 clubs, class rank 8 out of 310, tons of volunteer hours, AP scholar, world ranked competitive irish dancer - college is competitive! She did get a B+ in AP calc (and a B in freshman honors English, the rest A’s).

Oh my @Mjkacmom. Hopefully your daughter ended up at an amazing school. This will be a very interesting year.

She had Villanova as her first choice but they don’t give a lot of merit, ended up in honors at the university of Delaware with great merit and she absolutely loves it, said she is so happy we couldn’t afford Villanova. At one point UD was #5 on her list, so one’s dream school might not be even on the top of the list.
