Chances of me going to Georgia Tech

My father and grandfather both attended Tech. I've wanted to go there since I was about 7, though I was not as serious academically as I needed to be (I've been very lazy as homework goes). I am a junior now and want to know if there is any chance left me getting to go. I have a weighted GPA of 3.3 and a unweighted of 3.0, a 1360 on the SAT ( not including writing), and a 28 on the ACT. Thanks for the advice.

Well, GTech places very little consideration on alumni relations, unless it’s the absolute last thing to tip the scales. Your GPA is certainly going to be a hindrance, and the average SAT for this year’s admitted applicants was a 1457 out of 1600 (CR: 713 M: 744), and a 2151 out of 2400 (Writing: 694).

My advice is to take the most difficult classes you can and to try your hardest the first semester of Senior year. They might waitlist you, in that event, you’ll want to keep up that performance throughout your year. Take the SAT again, and study like crazy to get it to at least a 1500 out of 1600. You’ll need a boost on the SAT to try and “tip the scales” for the GPA.

It also matters on your gender, your location, and your ethnicity. If you’re in state or a girl, that will significantly help, as will not being Asian. It also depends what you want to go for. Engineering will be the toughest to get into.

I live in Atlanta and I am male and am white. I have taken 4 A.P. courses. I want to major in Business.

They don’t consider your major when making the decision. While being in state can help a number of in state kids with really good gpa’s and test scores were rejected.
I think it’s going to be even tougher to get in next year with GT going to the common app. I guess I would study really hard both in your classes and for the SAT, apply EA and then also look at the other ways to transfer into GT after a couple years at another school . Because honestly unless you have been taking all IB’s,a lot of AP’s or have some major hook you haven’t told us about I doubt a 3.3 is going to be good enough.
But that’s just my opinion I could be wrong.

Have you figured your GPA the GT way? If not figure it out perhaps it is higher than you have stated.

You say you are from Atlanta. You can go out to the internet and find out how many kids from your school went to GT last year. This will help you figure out if your school is a feeder school for GT. If it is a feeder school and the teachers at your school grade harder than other schools your chances could go up.

I haven’t tried the GT way. Honestly, I didn’t know there was a different way of calculating GPA. My school is very tough at grading. I attended a public school last year and transferred to a private school this year. I know of many kids from my public high school that went to tech, but the direction of this school’s ideology is leaning more to the arts though the curriculum is much harder.

I redid my GPA the way georgia tech does and I have a 3.52 weighted

Ok that’s a better GPA to work with. If you currently have AP’s and do well this semester your GT GPA will go up. Take AP’s next fall and work really hard that will boost your GPA also.
You should take both the ACT and SAT again preferably taking in May/June. (after some studying). That way you can figure out which one you should focus on for the fall test.
The above poster is right you need to bring one of them up. However you do have time on that.
