This I my 2nd semester as a freshman at community college. I have been taking random transferable units and didn't even know about "prerequisites" for certain majors until now. I want to transfer in two years. Will UC accept me if I just take transferable courses that have nothin to do with a major even if it goes up to 60 units? I really need help! Thanks.

You need to go talk to your community college counselor.

If it’s a part of your GE, you are fine. As said above, talk to a counselor and if not, check the IGETC to see if it fulfills anything there. If it does, you’re fine. But either way, you should be fine. Some people even take some culinary classes and still go to UC’s and are not chefs.

If you finish your IGETC, and your intended major is not capped/impacted, you will have a shot at many UC’s. This being said, don’t expect to get into Cal/UCLA if you haven’t done major prep (unless you have a very specific major that tends to not articulate well at the CC level). Those schools are competitive enough as it is, and the people you are competing with WILL most likely have finished their preparation.

You may also want to note that if you do not do your major prep at CC, you will have to complete it once you are at the UC, which means it may take you longer than usual to graduate.

My best advice is to just do your major prep, I doubt that its too late unless you’ve been taking the most irrelevant classes ever (not even part of IGETC)

Print out an igetc sheet from your college’s website, and also go to assist.org and choose your desired colleges and majors and it will tell you what you need. I also go to the 4 years’ sites and print their requirements for the major I want. I never need a college counselor! Do that stuff and you are set. If you have to, enroll in more than 1 CC and take online courses. make a planner of every course you will take every semester (considering prereqs for each class and whether you can get the class before it fills).

Igetc is not 60 units btw. You fill the rest of you 60 unit requirement with major prep and for me, fun transferable courses and easy ones.
