Chances of merit $?

Anyone chance my daughter for merit aid; She was invited to apply waiving application fee and essay, however, she submitted essay anyway; they just rec’d. her transcript and recommendations and now we’re waiting. Stats as follows: 4.1 weighted gpa, 18/357, will have completed 6 AP’s (rec’d. a 5 in AP chem and 4 in Lang/Comp), 11 Honors, 32 ACT, Straight A’s thus far, except for a B+ in 9th grade geometry. Tons of extra curriculars - captain of tennis team and debate team for this upcoming year; founder/Pres. of Leo’s Club, part-time job, teaching assistant in religious school; Nat’l. Honor Society, Nat’l. English HS and World Language HS. Applying pre-pharmacy - would like the conditional acceptance. I think she’ll get in, however, we are concerned about getting some merit; we know she qualifies as some other big schools (Ohio, Indiana, Maryland, UMass, UDel, Purdue) for merit, but she wants Pitt badly after a great weekend spent out there in July for an open house we attended. We are from NJ, caucasion. Chances, anyone?

PharmDMom,

Did your daughter send in a resume of activities? If not, she should do so ASAP just to show how much more impressive the high GPA & ACT score are (since she was clearly doing a lot outside the classroom). If she also sent in the essay and LoRs there is nothing you can do but wait. Applying this early was a good decision.

You may also have to accept the fact that the admission letter may come well before (i.e. weeks, months) any scholarship money. On the plus side, she is automatically UHC eligible which will definitely help her chances.

PharmDmom–my son was HS class of 2011, is PharmD class of 2017 so starting his 3rd year at Pitt, 1st year of Pharmacy school today. He had very similar stats, and received full tuition. With that being said, most of us agree that every year, that stats have to be higher for full tuition. I concur with AO that applying early is good and give them as much info as possible. Please feel free to private message my any time with questions as we’ve gone through the whole process of the first two years of Arts and Sciences and the application process for Pharmacy school. It’s all good and he’s very happy at Pitt. I would recommend setting up an appointment to meet with the School of Pharmacy rep just to sit down and talk with them. We did that after he was accepted but before he got the scholarship. It was a great experience and put my son at ease when decision time came. Here’s his stats for comparison:

jandjdad: Pitt can say whatever they want in regards to what the “criteria” is for getting the full tuition scholarships. They will bend the criteria if your student has something they want (hook).

If you have followed this forum, you will find there will be kids with stellar stats (including class rank) who gets zero or a smaller scholarship amount. Then you will have kids who have less stellar stats getting the full tuition scholarship. Both my boys received full tuition scholarships from Pitt. The older was ranked 3rd in his class but the younger went to a school that did not rank.

For scholarships, apply early!!! It also matters whether you are in-state versus OOS and especially from an underrepresented state.

What are the chances to get any scholarship $ with an ACT 32, SAT 1390, GPA 3.8, female from Northern VA?

Depends on how early you applied, major applying into, and how complete your application is. You should be automatically UHC eligible (depending on if your GPA is UW or W at 3.8) so that is good. However, Pitt is becoming increasingly popular for Nova/DMV area students, so the competition is getting much hard to receive money.

GPA is weighted, we plan to apply this weekend.

AwesomeOpossum, thanks for feedback; she actually listed all of her extra curriculars on her application and one of her teacher recommendations is also her advisor for the Leo’s Club. They work closely together and she wrote an amazing recommendation for her when she got into Nat’l. Honor Society. Of course, without seeing the college rec, I believe she probably wrote similar. Will keep everyone posted - hoping to hear by end of September and hoping for some scholarship following. We shall see.

TitanMom - thanks so much for your feedback! Stats do seem very similar to your son’s. We are waiting patiently. I’m hoping for the $10K OOS scholarship that seems to be somewhat popular with early application good students. To get full would completely blow us away, so I don’t even want to think about it. Lol. Will keep you posted and if she does get in, she may want to talk to your son or some of the other PharmD candidates. I will def take her out there again to sit down with someone in the school before she fully accepts. Thanks again!
