I'll keep this short and simple
35 ACT Composite
34 English
36 Math
35 Reading
34 Science
770 Physics SAT II
760 Math SAT II

4.0+ GPA (All A's with 2 B's)
9 AP Classes taken with all of the hardest included (physics, calc bc, bio etc.)

Debate Team Captain (Multiple local and national awards)
Robotics Team Captain (world championship qualifier 3x)
Tech Student Association Vice-President (Competed well at state)
Jewish Studnet Union President (VP last year)

Also I wrote some very good, inspired essays and my interview went really well

Finally my work experience is pretty good also. I was a camp counselor for 2 months straight at a sleep away camp for 8-9 year olds. I also tutor SAT/ACT for a few kids as well as freshman/sophomore classes. I also caddied one summer.

Ok, I’m just an ordinary kid like you but there’s something I need to say.

GOD YOU’RE SO SMART!!! You’re in 9 frikkin AP classes WITH A 4.0 GPA and your EC stuff are insane, specially cuz you’ve got the leadership stuff going on. I don’t know about other people but to me this is so good that I think you’re joking around with us…

But if not, I suggest you get 50+ community service hours. That would make you so godly

I do have 30ish hours of community service but I didn’t feel that it really added to my application much. And thanks for the response. Also I’m only in 5 AP classes right now, I took 4 the other years.

You’re a superb applicant! although admissions at schools like mit are sometimes random, I believe you should get in. Don’t worry about it too much, even if it’s not mit you will end up going to a great school. Best of luck.

You definitely have a chance. Write a killer essay, and you’ll be on your way. Also, what are your AP scores? It isn’t taking the APs, but the scores.

Statistical match as said above. However, your SAT II’s are a tad low for the top quartile for MIT – sorry to point that out. MIT is one of those schools that is a reach for everyone regardless of your record. You probably do not need to be told this, but I’ll do it anyway. Make sure to apply to at least 10 schools and you should consider the ones that offer you money and scholarships unless money is no object. MIT can set you back $250K and even more if you go through grad school. Also, do you want a research or hands on based education? I can only assume that you are interested in engineering since you were on the robotics team. But, what is your intended major?

I would also apply to Stanford, Cal Tech, Georgia Tech, Princeton, UC Berkeley, Harvey Mudd, and several other places that you feel are on track with your expectations. Don’t forget the safety schools! A match/safety for you might be RPI, WPI, Purdue, Michigan, Virginia Tech, etc.

My kid had very similar stats as you. He is a mechanical engineering major. He made some profound college choices based on his learning style and career expectations. He was uninterested in a purely research/theory based education. He wanted that plus a hands on experiential education that offered solid job prospects at top pay. Basically, he wants to be a working engineer immediately after graduation. So, he turned down many top schools and chose to go to Cal Poly SLO. Incredible school that graduates some of the top engineers in California. He loves it and as a sophomore has already been interviewed for internships.

In the West, Cal Poly competes directly with many top schools for talent.

Strength’s: GPA, SAT, Awards (great job BTW), Dedication to EC’s, Course rigor (those 9 AP’s are all before senior year, right?)

(Potential) Weaknesses:
SAT II’s - Many applicants to MIT have 3+ SAT II’s, so the fact that you only took two could definitely hurt you. Also, MIT really, really like to see 800 on Math II and 780+ on science SAT II’s. Definitely not a big weakness, but it could still hurt you. I’d recommend retaking Math II and taking chem or bio for other colleges.
Summer experiences - To be honest, many applicants to MIT do research or internships during the summer. Although you have done a few interesting things, I would be cautious about describing your work experience as “pretty good.” Your summer activites are definitely not terrible, but you should know that you’re competing against a lot of people who used their summers to pursue their interests in math and science.
of EC’s - You definitely have depth in your EC’s, but you don’t have a lot of typical science and math clubs/honors societies. Most of the applicants to MIT have a LOT of these typical activites, in addition to their in-depth EC’s. Again, not a big flaw by any standards but could definitely hurt you at as school as competitive as MIT.
General Interest in Math/Science - Colleges like MIT are looking for people whose applications are just oozing with interest in math/science. You’re robotics work definitely puts you close to that category, but to be more competitive, you need outstanding recs from math/science teachers and some deeply insightful essays on your interest in math/science.

Verdict: MIT is a crap-shoot so predictions are useless. You’re definitely competitive, but you also have a couple of weaknesses.

My back up is Georgia Tech (I’m from georgia so its instate admission) and I’m also applying to Rice and Cornell (mom went to Cornell). I know that my lack of research/interships definitely set me back (greatest high school regret) which is why I am trying to stress my robotics work.

Thanks for all the replies also!

My AP scores are
AP Physics 5
AP US Gov 5
AP Euro 4
AP Stat 2 (one semester course first semester+terrible teacher+I didn’t care about exam)
But MIT says they don’t look at AP scores for admission

@above, Good, that’ll definitely help your chances. Don’t worry about AP scores, you can just choose not to report AP Stat. Wish someone had told me how useless AP exams were so I would have taken fewer of them :P.

Ya I did and my school used to pay for our exams but not anymore so this year I’m only taking the social science ones that I am essentially guaranteed a 5 in.
