Honestly MSU is a big reach for you. Even though your EC’s are pretty good, both your GPA and SAT are well below MSU’s average which means that you have a low chance of admittance unless you raise your SAT rather significantly (or take the ACT).

okay i just signed up for the act. will this increase my chances of admission? the scores could be as late as NOV 8. Should I still apply earlier like in mid sep like i was planning? i am having the scores sent to them aswell through ACT

If you take the ACT then send it. Since you are taking it in Nov, I would apply in Sept and then submit the score. If you get waitlisted then they will already have the ACT.

Can you? Sure. Will you? I’d say it’s 50-50 at best. Taking the ACT will NOT improve your chances, but getting a 26+ will and getting a 29+ will SIGNIFICANTLY improve your chances.

thank you for your tips. i guess i really have to crack down and study for that ACT. does MSU have like spring semester admission (i heard some seniors last year talking about it in the UC schools out here in Cali) is that easier to get accepted?

If you do well on the ACT then taking the ACT can improve your chances. I’d aim for a 27 or 28 to give yourself a lot better chance for acceptance. If you apply you might be deferred (give them more time to make a decision instead of just flat-out accepting/rejecting you). They will likely wait for your senior grades and then make a decision. Sometimes they will accept you for fall semester with everyone else, but will also sometimes accept students for spring semester instead. Also, make sure not to slack off senior year and try to bump that GPA up as best you can.

Senior grades are VERY important. On the fb group for class of 2013, a few people had their admissions rescinded because they f*ed up senior year.

Noone can really tell you your chances of being deferred. However, it does seem that MSU doesn’t like to flatout reject people, but rather defer them. If you do really well your senior year, you stand a good chance.

put a lot of time and effort into studying for the ACT. if you can pull off a 25-26 i think you should be okay for getting in. if you score lower, you might end up getting deferred (i know very few people who msu flat out rejected right away). like everyone else said, if you do end up getting deferred, continue to work hard during your senior year. i know of 5 people from my school who were deferred and then received a letter from msu this summer offering them fall admission, so even if the may 1st deadline passes next year, its still a possibility.
