Chances of my son getting a scholarship to Fordham?

My son is graduating next year and is looking at colleges. We have financial issues and are looking for ways to pay for college without heavy debt. He is very interested in Fordham. Could he get a scholarship there with these stats, and if so, how much?

[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 1550/2280 (1550/2300 superscore)
[ *] SAT II: 770 Chem, 800 USH
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.69 (strong upward trend 3.21 freshmen year, 3.86 Soph Year, and 4.0 Jr. Year with 5 honors/Ap classes, one regular class, and gym; took all the hardest courses except apush which he was ineligible for bc of his freshmen year grades, but he attempted to make up for this by getting an 800 on ush sat and hopefully a 5 on the AP test for ush.)
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school doesn’t rank
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis):Havent gotten APUSH or AP Psych scores back yet, but expecting 4 or 5s on both

[ *] Senior Year Course Load:AP English, AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP Italian, AP Gov., Acting/ceramics (both are half year classes), Gym
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Most likely a NMF (231 on the PSAT)

[ *]community service: Tutored an economically disadvantaged every Monday during his soph, jr., and senior years, volunteered at a hospital two to three days a week during the summers after soph and junior years
[ *] jobs: gave guitar lessons

[ *] School Type: Competitive Public Schools (about 10 or so kids go on to Ivy’s each year)
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender:Male
[ *]Income Bracket: around $85,000 per year

if he is at least named a National Merit Semifinalist he should get full tuition, this is what I received. Go google fordham university semifinalist scholarship.

i looked at their website and it says he must be also be in the top 10% of his class to get that scholarship. However, his school doesnt rank. How could he still get that scholarship?

I was named a National Merit Finalist and will be attended Fordham in the fall…I received their scholarship despite my school not ranking…my guess is they will then take your GPA and test scores into a count…my guess is they just want to make sure your PSAT scores were not a fluke

My son got the Fordham National Merit Semifinalist scholarship and he was not in the top 10% of his class. He also got a Fordham sponsored NM scholarship so he got not only full tuition but also an extra 2K. Very cool. Your stats look good - you may even get the Presidential scholarship (full tuition & room and board).

would my son have a better chance at the scholarship by applying early action or regular decision?

Your S has a good chance at a scholarship either way and Fordham isn’t like BC where you have to apply EA in order to be considered.

I think he should definitely apply EA but keep in mind that his FA package might not be finalized until after RD packages go out bc they have been known to go up. Good luck! :)

sandkmom, I just did some google searching for info on BC’s NMF scholarships and couldn’t find anything. you absolutely have to apply EA? goodness. do you know the range of money they give out?

^^^That is a question for BC admissions counselors. It’s been 2 years since my S applied and he wasn’t NMF, but I do recall that they awarded something like 15 scholarships and you had to apply EA.

I’m a current student at Fordham University.
For reassurance that your son will get a hefty financial package, at least 20k upwards.
I received 14k a year and I had an SAT around a 2050, and this includes no need based only merit. But I was in the top 10%. I may have received a bit more because in high school I was on 6 episodes of an academic tv show in the tri-state area and won a prestigious business award in high school from Drexel University. But your son by my estimates may receive around 20-25k merit based and maybe a bit more in need based.

It is not possible to accurately predict how much $$ anyone will be awarded! There are plenty of applicants who are disappointed with their awards and based on their stats they are as competitive for merit $$ as anyone. You can say that chances for merit $$ look good, but this is one of those situations where you just have to apply and then wait it out.

If he’s at National Merit finalist he will almost definitely get a full tuition stipend, if not room and board as well. I was a National Achievement finalist (like National Merit but only for African American students) and I received a full tuition stipend and my grades weren’t nearly as good.
