i have a good reason for my low GPA

I think you may get in. I had a 2070 on my SATs and a 3.8 unweighted/3.94 weighted GPA. I thought 3.8 was low for NYU, so I had a good “excuse,” just like you. Both my parents suffered life-threatening illnesses, causing them to be in the hospital months at a time. I got 4’s/5’s on all the following AP Exams: English Lit, English Language, US History, Euro History, Psychology, US Government. I did a lot of volunteer work (probably +150 hours), did several activities that I won awards in (Model UN, Debate, etc.), played 4 seasons of school sports, and I worked for a Congressman for about a year.
I applied to CAS, and I was put in the Liberal Studies Program (LSP). If you don’t know what LSP is, look it up. Technically, it’s a division under the CAS where you spend 2 years under a very rigid curriculum and then you transfer into the school you originally applied to during your junior year. I turned down a few other colleges and decided to go the LSP route with NYU, because I don’t think it’s too bad.
LSP is basically students who appear to be perfect for NYU according to their application, but they usually lack in numbers somewhere. Personally, I think I lacked in Math. I got a 700 on my SAT Math portion, but I got 2 C’s in 2 high school Honors Math classes. I think they took into consideration my parents’ illnesses, but when it comes down to it, an excuse is only going to do so much.
Because your scores look a little low, I think you could still get into LSP if you are otherwise a very well-rounded individual. I’ve heard of many people with SAT scores under 2000 getting into LSP.
Keep working hard, and good luck.

I am involved in a lot of extra curricular activites does that help ?
overall my transcript has 6 C’s all in the math and science department because those where more difficult to catch up in
but this was because there was a lot of deaths in my family during the time, and then my parents too got sick then i got sick as well. then we moved out of the city where i went to school but i had to commute to school
will this greatly impact my chances ?
