And idk if this counts, but I've gotten 1st place at a bunch of different talent shows/singing competitions
Also, piece of fluff: I was an "American Idol Contestant" - never technically made it onto the televised show, but I got through callbacks and was thus technically labeled a "contestant". I might be on TV for a little bit, but nothing significant. I was thinking of milking this though - it's not technically a lie. I WAS a contestant... just didn't make it very far.

So here's my dilemma. My scores are clearly subpar. I took the SAT again last week, and I think it improved a lot. And I'm taking the ACT again at the end of this month. So I'm not TOO worried about those. It's my AP's and Subjects that suck though. I reeeeally wanted to early apply, but I don't know if I should do it with these abysmal scores, or if I should go into regular decision after I have had the chance to improve them. (EA test deadline = october, and the next available date is november).

Another thing was, I wanted to do the Arts Supplement (for vocals), but turns out, the entire application with that supplement is due the 15th! So, can't do THAAAT if I want to early apply. I still know that my chances of getting in will be higher if I EA, but idk if I should. Benefits of Regular decision is I'll get a chance to improve my app by adding the arts supplement and better subject tests. Cons, are obviously, it gets MUCH harder to get accepted.

So, do I even stand a chance in regular decision? Or should I EA anyway with my subject test scores? Seriously seriously incredibly confused :'(

BTW the major I want is "Science, Technology, and Society" - business/marketing/econ oriented, so I would not be pursuing music as a degree, but I still want to do the supplement cuz i might minor in it or I will simply continue to incorporate it in my college life outside of my major.

Thanks guys

If you are like STEM oriented, AP math/science tests need to be 5 so that you are proving that you are great at math and science.
Only thing I can recommend is to retake subject tests.(or ap test if you can…) You definitely to get at least 750 in tests you took, and 800 in math II will be great.
Your school stat looks great! As long as you took challenging courses, your 4.0 unweighted GPA means a lot!!

For awards, I wonder why you didn’t compete in any math/science competitions?? Did you r school not provide them, or does your town lack so opportunity? I think like chem olympiad or ARML. AMC and stuff would put significant strength in your app.

Just saying, make sure what you do in school is coherent with your majors: my mom’s friend’s daughter was a STEM oriented but her awards had no Science/math awards. Unfocused EC/Honors in term of club and competition can actually hurt you.(yet your work in student body government is very notable)

To me, you do have a shot, but you definitely needs better scores in mathII and AP math/science. Unless you have a extenuating circumstances or significant disadvantages in term of lack of school resources or finance, 680 in math II and 3 in calc bc won’t look great.

Lastly, WRITE A STELLAR ESSAY. at this point, this may be your last chance to show yourself. After all, this is the only thing you have the absolute control.

Good luck.

I suppose I should clarify the “Science, Technology, and Society” major. It doesn’t have to do so much with the actual science/tech aspect, than the influence on society. I plan on going into business/marketing, which is what that major seems to be aimed at (in addition to economics), rather than a STEM major.
As for my town lacking opportunity, I think that has a lot to do with it. Our population is about 90,000. But I have competed in Science Bowl for the last three years and I’m captain this year. But, I am not going into any science/math field - mainly because I want to major in econ or this STS major, which is aimed at marketing.
But thank you so much for your input. Yeah, I know my subject tests are really bad. So I was thinking of regular applying, but with an arts supplement. Do you think that would help boost my chances?

It can be considered a liberal arts/social science degree

@HPobsessed
Make sure you explain that your town lacks the resources for your interest.
I have a same problem. Our school has no interests in math/science activity, and there are only two STEM club. Science bowl, and math club I founded.
If you did your best in what your interest lies, you are totally fine.
For art supplement, why do you want to submit art supplement(I am genuinely interested)

@paul2752
Thanks for the info!!! I will definitely explain about the lack of resources (it’s sooo annoying right??) And I want to submit an art supplement because I feel like I have done so many years of musical theatre that I think I could do really well on a vocal art supplement, and if that’s something else they get to see about me, why not put it? Yeah, I’m going into business, but the supplement is not restricted to strictly music majors. Plus, I think (or hope) that it will help set me apart from the other business-oriented applicants. Since the deadline for the app with the arts supp is october 15th, though, there is no way I can EA with the supplement. So I’m thinking of regular decisioning with better subject test scores and an art supplement. What do you think?

BTW part of it is that I live close enough (relatively speaking) to Stanford to be able to go and live audition, which I think is pretty invaluable since where I live doesn’t qualify for an interview, but I’d still be able to see SOME stanford admission officers face to face

Definitely go for improving subject tests.
Be careful when you explain it though. Use additional information
Like say your region lacks resources, and if you do, mention what you do for what you are interested. For example, reading Business related or economic related books or read news about them. Don’t be like whiny(pretty sure you won’t though) when you write it in CA additional info.
Yeah Art supplement will distinguish you, too. Maybe you can indicate your minor is art(if it is) I had stanford conference in school, and sounds like your art supplement must be really great.
GOOD luck!
I am applying to Stanford, too btw.

Your ECs are great and so is your GPA. I think if you can get a 2250+ your good with the SAT.

Definitely retake the subject tests and SAT… Stanford likes those numbers higher!

I suggest you to improve your test scores before applying RD. In particular, your SAT2 if you want to submit them. Don’t do REA or you will be rejected early.

Thank you!!! I just got my SAT scores back from my 2nd sitting and I got 2300! Woohoo! Stoked about that :smiley: Now all I need to do is improve my subject tests, and I think I’ll have a shot!
