Chances of Switching Dorms?

Hi, I'm currently assigned to live in Bowles next fall, but I petitioned housing the day after I received my housing offer to transfer out to any Units (1,2,3) Triple, Double, Triple Room in Mini-Suite, or CK Triple. What do you guys think are my chances of being assigned to a different dorm? Anyone can offer some experience on this? Thanks so much!

And just what is wrong w/ Bowles? I always wanted to live there when I lived in Unit 2.

I don’t think your chances are that good, unfortunately. I know so many people that want to switch out of Bowles…

no offense UpMagic, but Bowles was not the kind of first year dorm experience I was looking forward to. Even if I may end up liking it, I would prefer switching to Units or even CK.

@singh2010: yeah, unfortunately, everyone i know who is transferring wants out, not in :/

Does anyone else have some input or suggestions into what more I can do?

You should try to come up with a reason that sets you apart from everyone else that’s trying to transfer. Like maybe you can say that the cost of Bowles is too high for you, and that you want a Unit triple for that reason ($11,707 vs. $13,393). Or you could say that you want a substance free dorm…I think there’s a building like that in Unit 1 or something.

your chances aren’t good. just go back through the pages here and see how many times the EXACT same question you asked is asked.

This guy is exactly right.

I had the same situation as you last year, I got put into Bowles after I had been looking forward to the co-ed dorm experience for so long. The day after I got my housing assignment, I sent in a petition to get into a unit triple.

KEY: You need to show that there’s a good reason. I just told them that a unit triple is $1,500 cheaper than a quad in Bowles, and I asked them to look at my financial aid for evidence that I needed to save money.

I’m fairly sure this was the reason why I got transferred to unit 2 when almost all of my friends didn’t (I only know of two other people who were put into Bowles at first but got a transfer)

Edit: and yes, the co-ed experience is 100% worth it. Quite a few of my closest friends at Berkeley are girls that I met in my building. Staying up really late, talking with a group of friends is completely different if there’s 50% girls vs. 0% girls. Plus there’s a billion other reasons that I don’t feel like writing out right now

Argh, the thing is that I have already sent them an email regarding me switching into a Unit 1,2,3 Double, Triple, Triple MiniSuite, CK Triple so they know its not entirely financial

Living in a 13k dorm IS financial burden especially compared to what my friends are paying for other colleges, and I would DEFINITELY like to pay 2000+ less as this would save my parents a lot of money, but seeing that I am paying OOS tuition, I don’t think my argument would be very strong no matter how much I want it :/

I sent them an email the day after I got my housing (which was almost a month ago), so does it still make sense to email them now and raise the issue of cost?

You could argue that BECAUSE you’re paying OOS tuition, any decrease in cost for housing would be especially helpful.

But, if you don’t get transferred out, Bowles isn’t all bad. Your dorm plays a role in your social life, but it isn’t necessarily everything. If you do indeed end up staying in Bowles, keep a positive attitude and you’ll make friends there. You’ll meet girls. Join clubs, join a fraternity, sit next to the cute girl in your discussion section on the first day. If you make an effort then Bowles will be just as good as living in any other dorm. That being said, I hope things work out for you. I definitely know that my freshman year, I would have been freaking out if they put me in Stern. Haha.

But your attitude is key in Bowles once you get there, if you end up there. After all, if you lived in a dorm right now, would you choose to be friends with the guy who’s constantly broadcasting he’s trying to leave, or the guy who’s upbeat about his situation and tries to make the most of it?

@ringopuppers: haha yeah that’s what I told them

i’ll keep an open attitude once I move in fosho, it’s just that it would be great if I could transfer to Units as they were my original top choices Thanks for the tips though!

If anyone else has any suggestions/tips please feel free to input

Bowles is an AWESOME place to live. Most of the people who talk **** about Bowles never actually lived there. When I got placed in Bowles the summer before freshman year, I thought this is going to suck and I did everything in my power to try to get my contract changed. Within two weeks of moving into Bowles, I fell in love with the place.

My sophomore year I moved to Foothill because my sisters told my parents a coed dorm would help me mature (I picked Foothill, because many of my friends returned to Bowles and I want to stay close). To put it short, coed dorming is overrated; there are plenty other ways to meet members of the opposite sex, being their direct neighbors is not necessary. My junior year, I went back to Bowles, loved it again, senior year moved to an apartment since a fourth year of dorming would be expensive.
