I'm starting university next month in NJ, but I'm not exactly overjoyed with my choice. I had originally planned to apply to USC & UCLA because I wanted to go far from home and I've always wanted to live in California, but I chickened out and didn't even apply. I'm hoping I can stick it out this year & then transfer in Fall of 2014.

I already have 16 credits accumulated from dual enrollment & AP classes. After the upcoming fall semester I should have 33 credits. My high school GPA was 3.93. 1730 SAT score and 25 ACT score.

Does it sound possible to transfer to USC? Any advice appreciated.

If you attend a bona fide university as opposed to a remedial high school, aka cc, then you have a good shot, especially if your gpa is at least a 3.5. Good luck.

SeattleTW just mad that our “university” is so embarrassing when it’s filled with transfers from CC. Give it a break, dude. No one gives a **** about where you did your undergrad, so the number of transfers aren’t going to affect the value of your degree. Undergraduate is the same anywhere if you make the most of it. CSUF, UCSD, SDSU, OSU, Purdue, etc… Stop belittling the future transfers who come from a CC. You’re not special nor am I just because we were accepted directly from high school. High school is a piece of cake, and with a 25% acceptance rate, USC is not special at all at the undergraduate level.

Anyone wishing to transfer needs to take care of BOTH financial AND academic requirements. My D applied as a transfer to USC after just ONE semester at her CC. She was accepted to enroll after she completed 3 semesters.

Finances ARE tough, so be sure to line that up so you won’t be sad about being unable to afford USC if you ARE accepted as a transfer. Not sure that there is much merit awarded to transfers either, so please keep that in mind.

It is definitely possible to transfer to USC after just one year of college. I enrolled at a university in NJ too and was accepted as a transfer student after my first year. FYI, I’m in engineering and had a cumulative GPA of 3.76. I had a total of 57 credits (including a bunch of classes that won’t transfer or matter to my major). Let me know if you have anymore questions!

I want to try to transfer to USC for film or journalism - I am going into my freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University - undecided major. I had a 3.9 in high school and a 2150. Any advice?

To SFFFFS: As a transfer, film will be tough to get into as a major. However, that shouldn’t discourage you from taking film classes and consider an application to USC. Journalism shouldn’t be too tough for you to gain admission as long as your grades are great and as you SAT/GPA exhibit, by intelligently choosing your classes (this can be done by talking to the USC Admissions Counselor assigned to your area for advice on choosing classes) and by intelligently choosing your profs, you should have a great chance for being admitted into Annenberg and with a good application to the Cinema School, you might be admitted into the Cinema School. I think it won’t hurt to apply to both schools as long as you are allowed to do so.
