What do you think of my chances of getting in? Thank you for your input! :)

Hey,

I am also a community college student, a freshman, but very very interested in transferring to NYU Stern. I think that you have a pretty good chance at getting in. One thing that I like about your info is that its really diverse and different, but it really is solid. As long as you write solid essays and connect the dots all together, I think the odds are in your favor. The only thing is that I am a little concerning about is the amount of units you have taken. If you are taking 6 classes a semester and around 20 units a semester that should add up to a lot of units. How many do you have? Most private schools don’t like it when you’ve completed in excess of around 2 years of coursework as an incoming junior. At the same time it also does show your motivation. It looks like you have completed all their recommended prereqs which is really really good. I still think that you have a good shot.

Personally,

I had a low gpa in high school, I did do International Baccalaureate though. I had a 2.9 unwtd gpa and 3.4 wtd gpa. But, I had decent SAT’s (2100), over 800 hours of volunteer work at the American Red Cross, received a couple of awards including a president’s award for that, had an Associate Diploma, and was a part of some clubs.

So far in my community college, I have a 3.86 gpa (I took a biology class in high school, that was my only B) Hopefully, by the time I apply, I will have more or less a 3.93 gpa.
Currently I am in Calculus 2, financial accounting, modern humanities, and microecon, and will go to Calc 3 and might take linear algebra. I have done macroecon, and the first english comp class. In addition, I will finish mangerial accounting, intro to business, the other english class, and take another science.

Apart from that,
I currently am Vice President of Muslim Student Association, should be pres next semester
Vice President and Co-Founder of Fitness/Health Club
Inter Club Council Representative of American Marketing Association (its a essentially a combination of a student body and a club position)
am a member of Transfer Student Organization
in the process of founding a business economics club
Also, I have joined Phi Theta Kappa this semester
and am most likely getting an accounting internship over the summer
In addition, I am really considering tutoring as well, but not sure.

What do you think of myself?

I did mediocre in high school terms of grades, but definitely have improved my work ethic and still had some decent things in high school.

Hey I am also at a california community college! How did you join alpha gamma sigma?

Hope what I told you helps,
thanks.

It seems both of you have decent credentials. With xxmzchoixx having somewhat stronger credentials. However even with a near perfect GPA and great extracurriculars it is very difficult to transfer to Stern both externally and internally from a difference NYU school. I’d say you have a shot at getting in but don’t put your hopes on it. But think of other options. If you are thinking of majoring in Economics at Stern, you can also take an economics major at CAS which is much easier to transfer into. Or if NYU is just out of reach, try CUNY schools such as Baruch or Hunter.

Thanks for your response. I agree with you that xxxmizchoixxx’s credentials are somewhat stronger. However, I believe that if I had written in more detail the highlights of what I had done with these clubs, then it could have boosted my credentials some more. Not trying to be cocky, just trying to keep my hopes up. Just wondering, were you a transfer student as well?

No, i’m not a transfer student but my brother was. He transferred from CUNY Baruch to Stern two years ago. Before, I skimmed through both of your posts and didnt realize that you have WAY improved your GPA in community college. Well, good news is, even though it is difficult to transfer, my brother actually had similar stats to you and mizchiox. Although he also had extremely good recommendations from Goldman Sachs from his internship there. But there is hope for you too! You have nothing to lose so you should definitely go for it. My brother thought he had no chance of getting into Stern as a transfer.

hey i like your extra’s, and your internship is a big plus in my opinion
do you have any leadership positions?
the biggest thing you need to raise is your GPA, but you are from a very decent school so if you can get ur gpa to 3.74 i think youd be good
if you can write really good essays i think you have a decent shot

hopefully i can get it too

@ill23will4, I think you have a great chance of getting in! You have a high GPA and plenty of good extracurricular activities. As for Alpha Gamma Sigma, my school actually invited me to join, but you can always apply for it at your school, if it’s available.

@giantmidget, your GPA is a little bit lower than average. Since it’s only your second semester, you still have time to raise it to at least a 3.8. Your extracurricular activities seem decent. But it’s not about how many activities you’re involved with, it’s about the quality of each.
