<p>Kind of embarassed to post here seeing as everyone here has godly gpas, but I'll give it a shot. I just applied to UCI and UCSD for winter 07 and am wondering what my chances are.</p>
<p>I messed up my first year at UCR with a 1.0 gpa, but I had some unforseen circumstances that I explained in my personal statement. This year, I brought my gpa to 2.45(still not that high, I know) and am applying as an English major with an emphases in Creative Writing to UCI and UCSD for winter transfer. If you need any more information to give me an answer, I'll be happy to give provide it to you.</p>
<p>Bottom line: Had a tough situation at UCR first year which caused a 1.0 gpa, raised it to 2.45 this year, applying as an english major with a 3.667 overall in english to UCI and UCSD for winter 07 - what are my chances?</p>
<p>because the enviroment is just not for me? i believe many people from 4 year institutions apply to other schools as the school they might presently be at might've not been their first choice.</p>
<p>dont be embarrassed to post.. im assuming since youre an english major, you clearly explained your "unforseen circumstances" in your statement.. your gpa DID increase and your major gpa looks good (did you finish 1a-1c?) so dont stress tooo much</p>
<p>Is 2.45 your OVERALL gpa? because i think that is too low, esp. for UCSD as an English major. Not to mention you are applying for the Winter quarter... which accept much less people as oppose to Fall.</p>
<p>If you don't get in, I suggest just to make the best out of your time in UCR. Life isn't about you liking where you are and what you do. A lot of people don't like their present circumstances, much like you do. It's about making the best of it, and rising above the occassion.</p>
<p>however, my first year i had to take care of my mother because she had surgery for a tumor. I had to drive about 1-2 hours to to her hospital just to see her everyday. Because no one was there for her except for me, I feel that that is a sufficient reason for my poor performance first year. I also held down a job while I went to school.</p>
<p>I'm just hoping that my personal statement will get through to them - as I think I really did improve this year and am continuing to improve.</p>

<p>My best suggestion for you, if you really want to transfer, is to apply for Fall. Try raising your GPA higher, showing that you are capable of improving you grades given that you weren't under so much stress (which you can then explain in your Essays).</p>
<p>i would imagine uci would be a large large reach with your gpa, and ucsd would be impossible. get that gpa up to around a 3.0 or a bit higher and you will have a shot at uci. i dont think, however, unless you garner around a 3.4 or 3.5 overall you will have much of a shot at ucsd.</p>
<p>ucchris: i know my friend got into ucsd with 2.8 gpa from ucr. i also know another girl who got 2.0 and transferred to uci for winter quarter. you don't need a 3.4+ to go from ucr to ucsd</p>
<p>check the average stats into the schools. ucsd average transfer for 2005 cycle was a 3.4, and i imagine uci around a 3.0 or 3.1. everyone knows somebody who got in to ucla or ucsd with extremely low numbers, and every once in a while it happens. but you cannot realisticly judge the posters chances by saying one of your friends got in with this number. you have to go by the average admits. going by one oddball person is who got in with low scores is not relavent. i know someone who got into ucla and ucsd with a 3.5 high school gpa, and low test scores. however, does this meen when im evaluating others who are applying as freshman that is the standard, of course not. it was one person, not the average. there is always exception to the rules, or in this case, the average. however, to accurately judge the posters chances, you need to judge the average admit for transfers, not one person or one of your friends. furthermore, consideration from community college is given before uc to uc transfers, which likely meens the poster would likely need at least as high a gpa from riverside than the community college average admit to gain admission to ucsd, since priority is given to cc students before other uc students. i would imagine a 3.3 or so to ucsd would make the poster competitive for admission, and a 2.9-3.0 or so competitive for uci.</p>
<p>i agree that a 2.9-3.0 would be competitive for uci, but i have unforseen circumstances written in my personal statement which will help explain my poor performance for my first year. i don't know how much that will affect my chances, but i'm hoping it'll be good enough.</p>
