Chances of transferring to UCLA with bad first semester?

I've always had this big dream of transferring to UCLA since I was little. I'm a bio major and i'm currently in my 2nd semester of freshmen year at a cc. The transition from high school to college was pretty hard for me. Due to that, I was playing catch up with all my classes all of first semester and I ended up with a 1.59 gpa. Those grades were a big wake up call. And right now in my second semester I've changed all of my habits and have been focusing on what's more important. Currently on 20 units and a part time job. I f I do really well this semester will I still have a shot of transferring when I apply fall 2015? If they see that I changed my mindset and greatly improved 2nd semester will that help? It's too soon to give up, and all i've been focusing on is school. But what do you guys think?

The average xfer gpa of admitted students is 3.7 according to https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14.htm You have this semester and fall 2015, those are all the grades they’ll know about. Also if you have any grades of D or F then those classes don’t count towards the units you need to transfer. The good news is that if you retake classes where you got a D or F then they use the new grade. The bad news is you need enough units to xfer to be considered, and retaking them means you are losing ground in building up units.

@mikemac That’s what I plan on doing. Last fall I failed stats with an F and Psychology with a D. So I plan on taking those courses again in the summer so that they can raise up my gpa and so i can redeem myself. Right now i’m taking Bio, Calc, Engish, chem, and counseling. I hope i’ll still be fine with having enough units since i am taking 20 units this semester.

One other thing you can do is see if your CC, or one near you, takes part in the TAP program. That is supposed to give you priority consideration for xfer (whatever that really means). See https://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/ADM_CCO/tap.htm
