I really want to go to Chapel Hill and im super worried about my admissions in! I just feel like my chances of being accepted or slim to none but im willing to do whatever it takes to improve my entrance because UNC is the only school i really wanna go to.! Im just wondering what i need to improve on and what would my chance be like of getting in..

I make mostly A's and B's and i did have a downfall my 10th grade year... My teacher failed me in my algerbra 2 honors class.. Which caused my gpa to go down drasticly.. I retook it online and made a B in the class.. Its the first class ive ever failed in my life so i know i was smart enough to pass..the teacher i think had something against me.. I know this isnt going to look good but im hoping it wont affect UNC's decision when i do apply.

My GPA is 3.7 W and 3.3 UW I also know my GPA is low which is what im trying hard to bring up!
My SAT and ACT arent really up to par for unc and i WILL be retaking those again! But here are my scores anyway ( this is without studying)*
Act: 22
Sat: reading-480 math-470 writing-420

I would be a first generation student and my EC's arent as good as they could be due to income and transportation troubles throughout my high school life but i have been and i am going to try and make an effort to change that but this is what i have so far..

Even though you are black and in state, I would say your chances are very very low with those test scores. You need to improve them significantly and your GPA is pretty low too. If you can get your SAT up to around 1800 then your chances are much much better.

yassyo- don’t give up your dream school, but expand your opportunities. UNC has turned down some top students- and having only one school in mind is risky for any student. NC has some great schools. You are motivated and as a first generation student, posting here shows initiative. You have taken honors classes. You had an academic setback, but you recovered. That counts. Think about your reasons for choosing UNC, and are there other choices that would meet them? How about a large school vs small? What academic support systems are in place, clubs, activities? It looks to me that you have the ability and drive to succeed at college, and the next step is to choose which colleges match you- and you need several choices because one is never sure with college admissions. Apply to UNC because you just don’t know, and bringing your scores up will help with admissions to all schools. Also be realistic and apply to other schools as well- and by carefully looking at some of them, you may find you like them too.

A have a friend who goes there and apparently from what I’ve heard the people there tend to be really racist. I’m not saying they all are or anything that’s just what I’ve heard about the school. Good luck!! Definately improve your SAT’s.

Yassyo- You mentioned financial need. Some of the smaller colleges may be better endowed financially than the state.

Some small schools provide more personal attention than a large school. Some that come to mind are Lenoir Rhyne, High Point, Meredith. Some schools have intercultural offices that are supportive of diversity and minorities. I have heard good things about UNC Asheville, Charlotte, and Greensboro. Look at your interests and what department of each school offers for that and how it would fit you. You want to work hard, but also be happy. Most schools seem to look for a diverse group of students- and as part of that group, you would make friends from all backgrounds.

If you apply to a range of school types, you will increase your chance at acceptance. Best wishes for your success.

PennyLane2011- Even though UNC is my dream school i have been looking into UNC Greensboro and im actually thinking about applying… After retaking the SAT and ACT of course because i want my best to shine through.

That’s great Yassyo. I wish you the best. Keep looking closely and yes apply. Many colleges will waive the application fee if there are financial concerns. Your guidance counsellor should know how to do this. This way you should not have to limit the number of schools you can apply to for financial reasons- and apply to several so you increase your options.

Guilford College in Greensboro is one of the “colleges that change lives” schools.

I’m not familiar with it, but if you are in the area looking at UNC-G, it may be worth a look.
