Hello Everyone!

I'm an incoming senior (in-state) and plan on applying to UT Austin for Petroleum Engineering. After hearing about the competitiveness of this particular program, for which they only admitted 93 students last year, I'm beginning to get somewhat anxious about my potential chances. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me some insight about my chances of being accepted. Thank you in advance!! :)

I know that I am already automatically admitted into the college, however that does not guarantee my acceptance into the program of choice. I would really appreciate any feedback or advice on my chances of getting into PE. Thanks again in advance!! :)

UT deadline is December 1st and if you expect to have good shot it, you should apply by October 15th, the early deadline.

So I don’t see whole lot of possibility in taking ACT and also SAT couple of times.

UT has rolling admissions. Also, it is fine if you retake the SAT more times, they just have to be sent before Dec. 1st. You can send your scores after you submit your application.

I think you have a good chance of getting in, just apply early.

UT has rolling admissions which means the seats can get filled before your scores get there.

I was one of those 93 admitted last year though I was out of state so I don’t know if that helped or hindered my chances. From what I’ve heard from the in-state people the majority had lesser class schedules than you in terms of AP sciences and math so that’s good for you. Very few had BC calc which surprised me, so taking it probably looks very good. I’m not sure applying early is mandatory since unlike A&M UT’s petroleum program does not have a “first come, first served” idealogy (I was accepted to the school and program in April and applied at the 2nd deadline), so if you need more time it’s fine. The only thing I see is that you need to boost up that SAT score. Most people I’ve talked to had over a 700 in math and about 2100 overall.

In all honesty though there is one thing that will probably help you get in. Not to upset anyone, but the program is very lacking in females and the department heads have verbally expressed interest in equaling out the distribution (I believe this year we started with around 40 women, though at least 4 or 5 have dropped since). So that may work for or against you.

The OP was a senior this past year, so your post is a little late.
