Sorry to say that your chances are not good. The state forces UT to consider class rank above almost all else. Two years ago my son was denied admission to the Natural Sciences - he was top 16-17% competitive high school with a 2090 SAT. He was offered CAP. I hope it works out differently for you- - Good Luck!

Forget the class rank portion, that just reflects the rest of the info you provided. You are a very good student, but not an outstanding one. UW GPA is a bit low for a highly competitive program. Core SAT is ‘only’ 1410. Great scores in general, but the competition for these spots is in the 1500s.

If you look at the formula UT uses, they pull out the math score for engineering admissions. You definitely have a shot. Good luck!

Here it is:
Engineering – ACT Model
-1.661 + (ACT EngComp * .045) + (HSR * .020) + (ACT M * .060)
Engineering – SAT Model
-2.254 + (SAT W * .002) + (HSR * .023) + (SAT M * .003)

Accepted to CHEME!!!

Congratulations! Way to go!

Heisenberg999, Congrats on your acceptance!

Just so other future applicants don’t consider this a slam dunk, my son was not accepted to UT in petroleum engr (he was accepted as a CAP). His resume is very similar to yours - 1460 SAT (770M/690R), plus academics and sports (no music, though). Unfortunately his rank was 7.8%, so the college counselor said that his application had only a very, very small chance of acceptance. Again, congrats on getting in!

I honestly have no clue on how I got accepted. I assume it was because of my essays and I think that UT really likes to see that you are persistent with your extracurricular. You basically never gave up on anything. Also, it helps to be good at everything you do in terms of extracurricular. Don’t just join clubs and organizations just to list it for colleges. Actually DO something in those organizations. Anyways, hope that helps anyone in the future! (ps. I think UT loves band students)
