Chances on a full ride to Miami University or Ohio State or a similar school?

Hey guys! First new discussion, so correct anything I’m doing wrong.
I’m currently a sophomore and have about 30 service hours for now. I plan on doing NHS next year, was co-captain of the math team this year, taking AP Calc BC and AP Bio this year, and got a 33 on ACT last summer (plan on retaking it cause I bombed the essay). I have approximately a 3.8-3.9 GPA unweighted. Next year I will take 5 APs and will do an internship next year at a local university. If I continue on this track and keep my GPA up, will I have a chance at a full ride to Miami University or a similar university? I plan on going to med school after undergraduate, so I don’t really want to spend thousands of dollars on a prestigious school for undergrad, and would like to get a full ride at a slightly less prestigious school. Bit of a long post, but thanks!

Full ride? Like all costs covered? Does Miami U offer this?

Are you instate for Miami…and Ohio State?

You’ve got the stats to be in the running for full tuition at Miami, but I’m not aware that they give full rides, and I don’t think full tuition is guaranteed. You qualify for guaranteed full tuition at Alabama based on current numbers (of course criteria at any school could change by the time you’re applying). Being a NMF could get you more, but still not a full ride. Are you actually looking for a full ride, or just full tuition?

There are very few “full rides” (all costs covered) at mid-tiers like Miami-Ohio, Alabama or similar.

If you make NMF (study the SAT so you score high on PSAT junior year), then you could get nearly a free ride.

There are very few full rides anywhere, unless you can throw a football or put a puck in the back of the net. You can, however, combine a full tuition scholarship with some other scholarships and get a long way toward having all your costs met. If you know that you want to go to OSU or Miami, go talk to them, find out what kind of scholarships you are eligible for and what else you can do to earn more awards. Look at local scholarships from the Elks or American Legion and see what those require - essays? community service? art work? Do those things.

If you can get a full tuition scholarship, you’ll be looking for about $15k extra. If you have a job, save half of what you earn. If a local scholarship requires you to join the tutoring club at school, do it. Suck up to the guidance counselors!

You could be a contender for the McNair Scholarship at University if South Carolina…assuming it still exists in two years when you actually are a senior.

There is an application and interview process, it’s not automatic…but if you are selected, you would get a full, free ride. In addition, South Carolina allows stacking of awards, so if you get the McNair, you could also get their NM scholarship award and have that for discretionary spending.

The application is a doozie, and is due either mid November or December 1 of your senior year.

Stamps is now at Miami of Ohio. That said, daughter of a family friend who had a 35 on the ACT, nearly a 4.0, did not get it, or any where near the full or even half tuition. When the girl’s family asked for a financial review, they were told that the applicant pool this year was amazingly competitive.

The OP hasnt confirmed whether in state or oos.

Miami does offer full tuition scholarships for instate students, but not full COA

Ohio State does offer full COA scholarships for students instate and OOS

I will say that Miami has an excellent track record of grad school matriculation.

I am instate for Miami and OSU. Might it help that I am white, black, and Hispanic? Quite honestly, I would love a full ride, but a full tuition would be awesome as well.

Miami sort of guarantees “half to full tuition” for stats. Most kids in my D’s class with those stats got 3/4 tuition last year. OSU has a few very competitive scholarships.

If you have significant financial need you will likely do better at a private school. Ohio has terrible need-based financial aid at the public schools.

I don’t need very much financial support, but my parents would love it if I could have a good scholarship as it would save them a ton of money. That sounds good for Miami; I think it is my top choice.

Well good luck then, Miami might do the trick! They do not say “guaranteed” anywhere on their site but I think it is all-but guaranteed if you are over the line with gpa and test scores, which it sounds like you will be.

The Morrill scholarship through Ohio State’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion gives out about 300-350 full tuition scholarships each year. The essay prompt this year was “in what ways is diversity important to your personal, academic, or career goals and how have you successfully leveraged, enhanced, and promoted diversity and other cross-cultural relationships among your peers and non-peers?” You won’t get the scholarship just because you are white, black, and Hispanic. It requires a showing of passion and commitment to supporting diversity through your community service work, extra-curricular activities, etc. You can learn more by searching College Confidential, Ohio State and Morrill. If you’re invited to interview, there are also a very small number of full ride Morrill scholarships given out.

I know that I won’t get scholarships for my color, but that opportunity looks good. I’ll search for that thanks!
