Chances on and Ivy league or UCLA

im an asian male from arizona, sophomore year, and want to know my chances for somewhat prestigious colleges.
im thinking about a major in CS, some sort of math related, data science, or physics
GPA: 3.8 unweighted like 4.4 weighted
Taking 3 AP classes currently, Calc BC, World, and CompSci
I am the finance lead on a robotics team, student council president for the second year
got first in American Protege piano competition, and MTNA along with winning states in drumline
I play ice hockey competitive, although I am out of commission to surgery right now and am probably top 20 in the southwest region
highest grade on PSAT
thats about it, thanks you all

I will only address UCLA.

  1. All the UC’s will be test blind through the 2025 admission cycle so HS GPA (calculated specifically for the UC’s link below, HS course rigor and the personal insight essays will be Very important)

  2. UCLA is a Reach school for all applicants and CS has around a 5% acceptance rate.

  3. The UC’s including UCLA does not offer need-based financial aid for Out of State (OOS) applicants and merit aid is around $2000/year and very competitive. Be prepared to pay full fees at $67K/year.

It is good that you are thinking of what colleges you might apply, just understand that there are many colleges with better CS programs than some of the “Ivy League” schools. CS is a competitive but a very marketable major so name/prestige is not necessary to get a well paying job post graduation.

ASU’s CS program is a great option and being instate will it affordable.

Your musical talent will make you an interesting applicant with an artistic side and a STEM side to present on your essays.

My advice is enjoy HS, take a rigorous course load with an emphasis in Math courses along with usual core classes: Chem/Bio/Physics/Foreign Language/Social Sciences/English etc…

I would start with college budget and get a number from your parents. Then run the Net Price Calculators (NPC) on several schools to get an idea of your possible costs. Then identify a safety school (guaranteed admission, willing to attend no matter what and affordable). After that, then you can explore other schools of interest.

Best of luck.

UC GPA calculator and only AP/IB or UC transferable DE courses will get the extra weighting. No HS designated Honors classes will get the extra honors points.
