He is currently trying to decide what schools will be ED; he loves Bates, Colby, Wesleyan and Conn College. He doesn't want to waste an ED on a super ridiculous reach.

Thanks!

I think he has a great chance: male, nice ACT scores, well rounded ECs. will he play soccer?

Everything looks great and given he is visible to adcom in showing his interest I don't think there should be any problem. I would guess that he would be in at all the schools you mention and if there is a reach school he would attend over all of the schools you mention, I would have him apply ED to it. Nothing expresses interest more than ED, and since you can only apply ED to one school, I wouldn't waste it on a schools he has an excellent chance to get in during regular decision. Remember, he'll never know if he could have gotten into a dream school if he applies ED to one of the schools you mention. That being said, if one of the schools you mention is his dream school then go for it with ED. Good luck.

i don't think he'll be wasting an ED on a super reach..like flyboy said...applying ED shows a strong interest and at a lot of schools your chances of getting in ED are slightly higher so he might as well just try at a reach school and the worse that can happen is he doesn't get in (which if he doesn't get in ED he probably wouldn't get in RD) or get deffered to regular admissions. Also, conn coll has an EDII and i think maybe wesleyan does too but i'm not sure. so if he applies ED to his reach schools, doesn't get in, there is still some time to apply EDII to conn coll if he's really looking for a quicker answer. Also, from what i've seen, if your'e on the fence at conn coll ED will definitely help. But from his stats it looks like he could definitely get in (the SATs are a little low but you can always write them a note and tell them to disregard SAT scores..they told me they would do that when i went o an info session). Also..conn coll requires two SAT IIs and it doesn't look like he's taken any? or maybe he just is waiting for his scores? either way if he studies hard for those and raises those it'll definitely strengthen his chances.

rma--i think we actually agree..what i meant was not to waste ed on ct coll becasue the sone probably would get in anyway. I didn't see it as a reach for him. I emant us the ed option for a real reach...if in fact there is one the son would also be happy at.

Hi,
He just contacted the soccer coach; he would like to play if he could make the team. He has his fingers crossed for that!
Adigal

Thanks for all of your help. I thought Conn College gives you a choice of SATs, SATIIs, or ACTs? I had better go check again!
Thanks,
Adigal

Hi Adigal. At least as of last year, I believe you could submit an SAT I, or the ACT and 3 subject tests. But some people on other places on CC have said all that is needed are 3 subject tests, period. I'd check the website...it's been updated and reworked and much better, IMO! Best to your son this year, soccer sounds like an added bonus for Conn! My senior is sad to see her time there coming to a close. :-(

Thanks, Nikrud,
My son is going to apply ED2, but we are worried that the chances are no better than RD for Conn College. Have you heard about this?

My son applied last year (and is now a freshman there) but I think he only submitted his ACT (no SATs or subject tests)...

Adigal, no need to worry about those submitted SAT scores. The Conn website has the strongest statement about that I think I've ever seen:
the Honor Code binds us to disregard scores you may have submitted but do not want included as a part of your application.
In fact, contrary to the policy stated on the admissions website, the Conn supplement makes it impossible to ask them to consider both ACTs and SATs, even if you wanted to.

His ACTs are well above the 75th percentile (=30), and remember that that score is for admitted students, not the enrolled class, and for those students who did not withhold their ACT scores in favor of higher SAT IIs (only 32% of applicants). In other words, his test scores are basically off the charts relative to the entire applicant pool.

With that, not to mention strong class rank, good grades, super ECs, a fairly rigorous schedule, gender, and possibly ED in his favor, I think he'd be a very, very strong candidate. Good luck!

I love this college. I love that they have such a strong Honor code that they themselves follow it, and let prospective students know that they follow it.

His SATs are fine for Conn. College. Should be admitted to Bates, Colby, Wesleyan and Connecticutt College regular decision. Outstanding profile. A 34 ACT qualifies your son for serious consideration at any school in the country, save for CalTech. If your son's college search is over, then apply ED/EA to his first choice school; otherwise he can certainly be competitive everywhere else. P.S. I am a big fan of Conn. College with friends who hold positions there and in no way want to discourage Conn. College as a first choice.

He loves Conn College. He liked Middlebury after first visiting, but thought about it, and I think he feels it is too "white bread" for him. I mean no disrespect to the college, but it felt that way to me too.

I am really glad to hear that you love Conn College. Of all the schools we visited, that one felt the most "alive" to me. A professor teaching class in the cafeteria, lots of flyers up all over for activities, and how can you beat the Camel Van??? Conn College looked busy, maybe a bit messy, but alive!! Some of the others looked perfectly sterile, which turned me off. My son loves people and action! He has to decide, of course, but I thought Conn would be perfect for him, and he loved the feeling too. Much better than the more prestigious Middlebury for his personality, I thought.

Thanks for all of your help,
Adigal

Please define "white bread." As I understand the phrase, it's a pejorative term that refers either to the white middle class or to a bland person. Middlebury is more racially diverse and has a greater percentage of students receiving financial aid than Conn College. For example, Conn College is 6% international students (Midd is 10%), 73% Caucasian (Midd is 65%), and has 41% of student on fin aid (Midd has 45%). Perhaps you’re just talking about a "vibe" you got? A country club feel?

I did not mean offense, but when we visited Middlebury and a student asked about diversity, the tour guide went on and on about their international students. Plus, we didn't see anyone but white students. But your figures seem to indicate they do have diversity, so I am wrong about that. I did get that country club feel, though, the school was so perfect.

Adigal - after tours, etc., my D and I also felt a strong pull toward Conn. Now after 4 years, I see that it is a school that sort of marches to it's own beat, successfully so. There are a lot of happy kids there, and the faculty seem to truly enjoy their time with the students. Leo Higdon seems to me to be a gem. I agree tho, that the campus can be a little messy, having somewhat of a shall we say 'windswept' look...LOL. But I attribute that to the constant flow of energy! D had very strong stats similar to those of your son. She has been challenged and pushed inside and outside of the classroom since that summer day in 2004 when she arrived on campus for her COOP Orientation trip. She followed her heart and now she's so glad she did. Good luck, I know how trying this time can be! Niki
