I’m a freshman who just started school at a university in the Fall of 2022. I’m currently studying Criminal Justice on the Pre-law track and plan to attend law school after my undergrad. Northeastern has been a school I’ve wanted to go to for a while based on the location, size, opportunities, and programs. I’m also very familiar with the school because I’m a triple legacy (mom, brother, sister). I’m not happy at the school I’m at right now at all, most likely because I decided to go here at the last minute, and I feel like the opportunities here for me to succeed are lacking. The more I’m here, the more I realize this isn’t the school for me, and it also makes me realize that Northeastern is a school I want to be at. I plan on transferring after my first year for Fall of 2023, but I know that their admissions are really unpredictable considering the over-enrollment and increase in applications. Do I have a solid chance as a transfer applicant?
For some background, in high school, I had a 3.8 GPA (we didn’t have a weighted GPA), was heavily involved in clubs, and had a few leadership roles and community service hours. So far in university, I’ve also maintained a high GPA; I’ve been doing volunteer work since the summer, and I plan to start a club here but I’m been focusing on having good grades because I know I want to transfer out.
Some guidance and advice would be really helpful. Thank you!
Per your previous thread, you were denied at Northeastern. This needs to be considered. How to get into Northeastern University as Transfer
In general I think it is a terrible idea to start one college with the intent of transferring out. This can stand in the way of your making meaningful friendships, developing relationships with professors, and getting involved on campus. Then if your transfer doesn’t work out as planned you are really stuck. It is fine to throw in an application to Northeastern but there is no assurance you will get accepted (I do hope it works out).
FWIW per the 2021-22 common data set Northeastern accepted 662 out of 3,248 (20%) of transfer applicants last year.
I did not plan to start college with the intent of transferring out. After two months here, I just realized this isn’t the school for me, but I did not intend for my experience to be this way. I’ve made friendships, been heavily involved in the school, and developed relationships with my professors, but even then, I still do not think it’s a good fit, and I have many problems here. I will be transferring out whether it’s to Northeastern or not.
OP- all you can do is apply and hope for the best.
However- what’s your plan B?
" I feel like the opportunities here for me to succeed are lacking. The more I’m here, the more I realize this isn’t the school for me, and it also makes me realize that Northeastern is a school I want to be at."
I am sure there is more to the story than just “I want to be at Northeastern” and for sure, you need to present a stronger argument in your application than “the opportunities here for me to succeed are lacking”. You don’t need to tell us all the details- but you need to work this out in your own head. How on earth could you tell after two months that there aren’t opportunities where you are to succeed? You haven’t taken a single upper level course yet! You haven’t met with anyone in career services! You haven’t met with anyone in the pre-law advising program (who might tell you to drop CJ-- it’s a weak major for law school admissions) and major in history or poli sci or linguistics).
How can you know all these things as a first semester freshman???
