Chances OOS

Georgia Tech is my reach school but I really loved it when I visited. Im from an extremely competitive area, northern virginia. Im in a class of about 700 and my school doesnt rank.

GPA: 3.85
SAT: 700 M, 630 CR, 560 W
ACT: 33 M, 26 R
Classes taken: All A's in honors math all the way through HS, AP World, AP US History, AP Computer Science, three years of spanish. Other honors courses as well
Senior Schedule: AP Physics, AP Calc BC, AP Statistics, AP government, Entrepreneurship (Dual enrolled college class), English 12, Accounting.

Total of 7 AP's

EC's: Had steady job since 15, own business teaching tennis, VP of spanish club, lots of activity with DECA, volunteer basketball coach, captain of varsity tennis team and was All-Region last year.

Ethnicity: White

Special Circumstances: Type 1 diabetes diagnosed sophmore year during critical time of school.

How much of a reach is GT? Thanks!!

An 1890 is a little bit low, but your GPA seems fine. I think you’ll get in but it’s not a guarantee.

Thanks, Im still waiting for my final SAT scores so hopefully they will be improved! And really, I thought my GPA would be on the low side…

Is your 3.85 Tech Weighted? List out all your core classes here and I can calculate that for you if you don’t know how to (Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Foreign Language).

Our grading scale is tricky as we literally had one my first two years and another my second. The scale for the first two was 100-94 A, 93-90 B+, 89-84 B, 83-80 C+…etc and my last two years it was 100-93 A, 92-90 A-, 89-87 B+, 86-83 B, 82-80, B-

9th grade (old scale/new scale)

Note: I wrote a note that i was diagnosed with diabetes my 10th grade year and it caused my grades to be lower then they should have.

THANKS!!

You’ve got a 3.69 which is definitely below average. The middle 50 range last year was a 3.75-4.06 I think, and the 3.69 coupled with an 1950ish (your 33 will convert to something like a 740) makes you competitive but it is a tad of a reach. That said, obviously people under the 25% range get in - it’s not like you are denied if you are the 24% for Tech - that means you were still better than 24% of people who got in (some of which are athletes =) but still, slight reach but you’ve got a shot.

wow i go to the same county as you and am a little confused on my GT gpa. below are the grades i got from 9th to 11th, in my core classes, can someone please tell me my GT GPA:

my GT SAT is a 2080 and I am applying as a bio major. so from my GT gpa and SAT, how competitve am I for admissions? btw im OOS (northern virginia)

I calculated a 3.53 at the finish of your Junior year. That, with a 2080 definitely makes you also a tad of a reach but you’ve definitely got a solid chance.

do you know if GT would recalculate my gpa once they get my semester grades for 12th grade?

I would think so but I can’t guarantee it. Honestly, chancing for a GPA like yours is tough. Nobody on here really thought I would get in with a 3.50 GT GPA, but what they forget is my school (and maybe yours) don’t get these 5 point bumps for honors classes and 7 point bumps for AP classes. GT doesn’t take those away when they calculate your GPA, and that is a common occurrence in Georgia public schools. I presume your school will send a school profile like mine did which gives them grade scale, etc…With these point bumps, my GPA would have been more like a 3.9 or 4.0, so like I said, it’s hard to compare students with their system.

SL, can you do mine as well? (OOS), I’m having trouble doing it.

9th

My school’s weighted GPA is 4.504 (20/538= top 3.7% in class)

ACT are 34 Comp, 10 essay (might be 35 superscore, waiting for results in december), 780 chem, 800 math 2.

Applying BME

Good ECs: 2 years research, produced 3 research papers, nationally ranked in table tennis, captain of A team for sci bowl, NEAML, CSAML qualifier for math team, vp in chess club, co captain of chess team, 300+ hours of volunteer

Are chances high?

Drop the research courses, the current issues courses, and art. Remaining is 16 A’s + 5 B’s. That’s 164+53=79 quality points. Add in 0.5 * 10 for 9 AP’s and 1 College course brings you to 84 quality points. Divide by 16+5=21 courses, and you get exactly 4.00 GT WGPA.

Are your research papers published anywhere?

^The current issue course is a mandatory history course at our school. Also, the research courses are considered as SCIENCE courses, not electives.

Art doesn’t count? Alrite, I’m fine with that, lol.

It’s not published anywhere yet, but it will be within 1-2 months (in Journal of Organometalloids).

is 4.00 low for an OOS applying to GT? GPA is the weakest component of my app :(

Are you on a second round R&R, on a conditional accept, or are you on a full accept on that paper? It makes a difference. Also, are you a first or second author, are you down in the et al group?

As far as those courses, GT will drop them.

I’m not sure what those terms exactly mean. My professor is doing all that stuff. However, there will (at least there should be) only be 2 names on the publication: my professor’s and mine. So yes, I will be listed as a co-author.

But do I really need to go that detailed? I think I have a good shot at GT regardless.

Those phrases are the current positioning in the review process. Think of it in the context of applying for the PSP:

Submitted a paper = submit an application
R&R = you’ve been selected for a local interview
Conditional acceptance = you’re a finalist and have an interview in Atlanta
Acceptance = you’ve earned the scholarship.

Telling someone you’ve submitted an application to GT is very different than telling someone you’ve been accepted and have a full ride. The same thing goes with papers. Anyone can submit a paper for a review. Few get R&R and very few are accepted.

I know for a fact that both the research places where I work, the professors are both highly regarded in their fields, and when I asked them, they said all the papers they have submitted have been submitted.

hey guys!!

GPA:3.85
SAT I:
CR:600
W:580
M:800

SAT II:
MATH Level II:800
CHEM:710
PHY:730

im from outside US.
Can i please know wht are my chances of getting into GT with my sat scores??

^You are pretty much in assuming your ECs and strength of schedule are good enough. I’d be shocked if you were not admitted.
