Chances OOS?

Hey all. I'm a junior right now at a competitive public school. So far I'm thinking about applying to UCLA under the College of Letters and Science as an Atmospheric, Oceanic and Environmental Sciences major.

[Academics]
GPA: 3.96
WGPA: 4.75
No rank
Courseload: 5 college prep courses, 9 honors, 8 AP, 2 at Princeton University, 1 independent study on environmental studies; skipped 2 years of math, 1 year of programming, 1 year of chemistry, and 1 year of music theory; exhausted all bio courses at my school, so I'm taking 200-level classes with Princeton students next year --> hardest courseload in my grade

[Test scores]
SAT M: 800
SAT CR: 720
SAT W: 720
SAT II Bio: 800
SAT II Chem: 800
SAT II Math 2: 800
AP's sophomore year: Computer Science A 5; self-studied Biology 5 and Environmental Science 4
AP's junior year: Calculus AB, Chemistry, English Language; self-studying Human Geography, Psychology, Statistics

[Primary extracurriculars and TERMINAL officer positions]
Environmental Club - President (and founder)
Debate League - President
Tutoring Society - President
Amnesty International - Vice President
Model United Nations - Vice President

[Secondary extracurriculars]
French National Honor Society
Science Club
Soccer

[Recognitions]
USA Biology Olympiad semifinalist (top 500 in the nation)
NJ Science League qualification and certificates
NJ Governor's School on the Environment nominee, finalist, then the program was canceled
AIME qualifier (115 AMC 12)
Shore Bowl quarterfinalist and team captain
NJ Scholars Program (humanities focus) nominee, finalist, scholar
Princeton University Moot Court Tournament seventh place team/quarterfinalist
Colonial Valley Conference fourth place team
Varsity Policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate teams
JPMorgan Chase Lincoln-Douglas Tournament Award
AP Scholar last year, hopefully National AP Scholar this year
...And some other small stuff

[Summer activities]
2003 - travel in Europe and Asia
2004 - skipped 2 courses
2005 - skipped 1 course, worked as a tutor
2006 - NJ Scholars Program, Environmental Management course through Harvard SSP, JSA symposium on leadership and politics, maybe getting a job and/or a course or two at the local CC if possible

I've explored the fields of biology and public policy throughout high school, and they overlap nicely in the field of environmental studies, which I plan to major in in college.

What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for any comments. :)

UCLA: Safe Match (out of state)

i dunno man, you might wanna try a less competitive school...try to up those SAT scores a lil

Really? Do you think my SAT will hurt me that much? I took the ACT a couple days ago and will retake in June if necessary. How much would a 35 improve my chances? Also, I'm retaking the SAT this fall. What do you think I should aim for?

i disagree w/ Franchise1

your sat scores are FINE and youll def get in.

hell, i got into ucla w/ around a 1900 sat score. and my ecs weren't spectacular or anything

Nice sarcasm, Franchise1. But some people don't catch it, haha.

I'm tempted to call UCLA a safety for you. You might even get money!

Ahh I can never seem to get when people are being sarcastic haha.

killrockstars - may that have been because you're a Cali resident? Remember, I'm applying OOS, so it's significantly harder to get in, right?

Neo Yoyo - damn... that'd be nice lol. But are state schools even allowed to give money to OOS students?

Is UCLA even allowed to give merit-based scholarships to OOS applicants?

I got into UCLA out of state with much lower scores than you:
SAT Verbal- 740
SAT Math- 650
SAT Writing- 630
ACT Composite- 31
4.0 GPA Weighted
Good ECs and essays

I was quite shocked when i got that acceptance letter. I think you will be more than fine.

Congrats, instntmacncheese! And thanks for the encouragement. :)

How about money? Does UCLA give merit aid to OOS applicants? This is pretty big for me because I think I'd rather go to Michigan on a scholarship than a UC with full tuition, with travel expenses and all...

yes they do, but still, in the end, be ready to pay most of it out of your own pocket or through loans. i received no merit aid at all, only loan "awards", therefore, its ~41k a yr for me. the most merit aid i have heard of an OOS student receive was half tuition paid, but even he ended up not going.

but with stats like yours, you will most definitely get some sort of merit aid.

Oo that sounds nice hehe. Well, I'll still apply and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.

ha ha... i really didn't catch the sarcasm there, kinda hard online, you know?

jtjz007, i'm from NY

what do you plan on studying?
