chances out of state

3.7 unweighted, about top 20%, 2210 sat
5 APs by graduation
national merit semi...
varsity golf, newspaper, some work experience, lots of community service, lots of random ecs (nhs, internships, etc..) but nothing too spectacular

parents are south asian, speak urdu and bengali

what d'ya say? will i get in? do i have a shot at the business school?

I think you have a very good shot at getting in but UT can't be much less than a match/reach for an OOSer...I say go ahead and apply. You stand a chance at getting to the business school, but only 25% of the spots are reserved for non-top 10%ers, OOS students, and schools that don't rank, and competition is fierce.
You could always go to UT, maintain a high GPA your first year, and transfer into the B school.

so do i have a good chance (better than 50%) or is it a reach (~25%)?

you have a great chance...actually, ull definiteley get in...trust me- are u just wanting to go to business honors or just business? business honors might be a reach, but regular business u have an awesome chance

of course i'd prefer business honors, but i'd definitely be happy with just business. one more wuestion -what dorms would you prefer applying to (im a guy)?

It depends if you want to live in an on-campus dorm or an off-campus dorm. I will be living in an off-campus dorm (right across the street) because I would prefer to have a private bathroom for the same amount of $$ and there is more space. On UT's website for the on-campus dorms, you can find descriptions of each dorm and quotes from current residents and pictures. San Jacinto is probably the "nicest" dorm but is also somewhat quiet and introverted. Jester is the ultimate "dorm experience," with 3000 residents and its own zipcode, but is very cramped (but tons of food is in the dorm). There are other smaller dorms such as the honors dorms and single sex dorms, which offer a more intimate environment.

my sat is much higher than my act (31). they'll look at the sat and not the act, right?

Hmm. I don't know about those people who were saying you'd be able to get into the business school. That's iffy. To get into UT I'd say you have a great shot.

You'll definitely get into UT, but I wouldn't say you'll definitely get into McCombs as a direct admit. I say you have about a 65-70 percent chance at McCombs.

i just found out my school doesn't rank. how does this affect my chances? also, i made a really silly typo in essay B (left out the word "an..."

also, once you're in, how hard is it to maintain a good gpa at the biz school?

givlupi, I hate to be a pessimist, but after the experiences with some of my S's friends (all in state), I don't believe your chances are that great, certainly not to get into the business school. Last year, it was pretty brutal, and many kids that I thought would be shoe-ins for business did not get in, they were bumped to liberal arts. These were all top 10%ers with similar scores. My understanding after talking to some of their parents was that they were told that they cut it off around top 5% or so because of the exhorbitant number of applications. Best of luck to you, you have great stats, unfortunately, UT has become extremely numbers driven and in state kids get preferential treatment. IMO, you would be wise to consider it a reach school.

I don't know about calling UT a reach, but its definitely not a safety either...somewhere in the match range, I would say. I got into the College of Liberal Arts oos, but i don't know the difference with mccombs. your stats look good, but ut does seem to have a somewhat random acceptance process sometimes...bottom line, don't bet your diploma on getting in, but don't spend time stressing out about it...you'll probably find out soon anyways.
