I'm planning on majoring in Music Education. (Yes, I know I have to audition, but can you chance me academically?) Also, do I have any sort of a chance of getting a scholarship here? I like UMass better than Rutgers, but I'm not sure it would be worth it to pay $10,000 more per year when Rutgers has a better reputation.

I think you should totally go to UMass if you’re accepted. It is a great school on a the rise as evidenced by it’s dynamic admissions statistics:

The incoming class of 2013 had an average high school GPA of 3.6 out of 4 and more than 50% of students were in the top 20% class rank making the school more competitive for the 7th consecutive year.[16]

Acceptance to the Commonwealth College honors program of UMass Amherst is more selective with an average SAT score of 1330 (math and critical reading) and an average high school class rank of top 8%.[17]

I have encountered nothing but amazing professors in my time at UMass, and the student body is getting smarter and smarter. While the campus is quite large, I’ve found that is very to get around, and there are so many resources available. We are a member of the five college consortium so as a student you would have access to classes at Amherst college, mt Holyoke, Hampshire and smith (schools that are, perhaps with the exception of Hampshire) more prestigious than both UMass and rutgers. With that said, I have found no correlation between quality of classes and prestige of school while taking enrolling at the different institutions in the area, so I know the academics at UMass are top notch. Additionally UMass no longer has the party reputation it used to have–I’ve actually found that the parties at Amherst are wilder and more plentiful and accessible. Additionally, many of my friends at Amherst and mt. Holyoke take a number of classes at UMass every semester (and also rave about how our food is much better than theirs). In short, come to UMass–it is very much worth the extra 10k, and actually all of my friends from the new york/new jersey area consider UMass to be a much better school.
