bump .

Your scores are good. But you're asian. And business programs have plenty of Chinese American boys. Obviously, you've got a great shot. But don't be surprised if a handfull of those places reject you.

"Your scores are good. But you're asian. And business programs have plenty of Chinese American boys. Obviously, you've got a great shot. But don't be surprised if a handfull of those places reject you."

I think you have a great shot in most of these, but yes your heritage will play against you.

yea i know
but does anyone have constructive criticism? anything that i can improve on? i cant change my ethnicity.

Personally, I don't think you have very good chances at the very top schools like the Ivies + MIT.

1) As everyone has mentioned, the fact that you are Asian will hurt you.
2) You seem very one-dimensional. No music, no sports, very little volunteering... It is good that your awards and activities show that your main passion is economics/business, and I do understand that colleges want well-lopsided students as well as well-rounded. However, the thing is that your achievements in econ/business are not very impressive either...it's just above average. So you won't stand out among the 15000~20000 applicants that the colleges get each year. (you will be considered as neither a well-rounded or a well-lopsided individual).
3) Your SATs are not terrifically high, but even if you raised your scores, I don't think it'll help your chances that much (because as I mentioned already, your extracurriculars are too weak).

Sorry for being harsh, but that's my honest opinion. I'd predict that you'll get rejected by Penn, MIT, and HYP, and get into 1~3 of Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, NYU Stern, or Rutgers.

One thing I'd say is that if you feel that the Fed Challenge was a great learning experience for you.. write about it in your essay. Definitely make sure to have an interesting essay!

Your SAT scores (a 1510) are very good for lots of these schools as it is.. but if you can bring up the CR score to a 750.. your chances will increase for sure! Otherwise, I think your chances at HYPM are slim.. you have a pretty good chance though of getting into a few schools on the next level though.. maybe even Wharton, if you show a passion for business!

Rutgers is a good safety for you.. and I say after that.. apply to about another 5-9 harder-to-get in schools which catch your interest (preferably 2/3 reaches and 1/3 matches) and you should be fine!

Also if you are really into Econ.. I'd definitely recommend adding Duke to your list! :D. It doesn't have a 'business school'.. but is a great stepping stone for such a future.

coolatroopa, wharton has a lower acceptance rate than harvard
but thanks for your input nonetheless

if you show a REALLY STRONG passion for business!

You never know.. Wharton attracts a different kind of person than Harvard.. and would be wise to get the ones they think are truly the most likely to go on with and enjoy working with business in the future

One needs to find out what Wharton's average SAT/ACT is first.. can't be that much higher than Penn's overall average, but who knows...

However, for now.. I guess I'll say that Wharton would actually probably be at the HYPM level.

Very Unlikely:
Wharton, HYP, MIT, Columbia

Possible:
Darthmouth, Brown

Likely:
NYU Stern, Gtown, Tufts, Cornell, UChicago

Almost Definite:
Rutgers, Carnegie Mellon Tepper, UMich Ross, Emory

And Wharton does not have a lower acceptance rate than Harvard, despite the rumors that its students spread.

I don't think you have good chances at HYPM or Columbia. I also don't know that Georgetown or Brown have great undergraduate business programs, and Emory isn't a good fit for a lot of people.

I think you could have good results applying to these schools: Penn (ED), Chicago (EA), Michigan, NYU, Carnegie Mellon, Dartmouth, Tufts, Rutgers.

This has a range of reaches (Wharton, Dartmouth), low reaches (Chicago), matches (Tufts, Carnegie, Michigan), and safeties (NYU, Rutgers).

im thinking about a lot of the same schools.. i think u should be set for all of the schools that u said "u can chance me if u have time" and the other ones above except for Harvard, Princeton, and Yale could go either way.. but for HPY it's def. tough

will somebody chance me? i made my own thread but only one person responded and he wasn't very helpful (no offense pimpinbigsur)

Just a question. What is the reason people say Penn Wharton when they are applying to undergrad at U of Penn? Is there Penn Anything else? The other one is Penn State, so saying Penn for U of Penn should be enough..What is this Wharton thing?? Is it part of the U of Penn "recognition" inferiority complex? Just curious... I have seen that for a while..

No, Wharton is not to distinguish from Penn State, it is to distinguish from other colleges within the University of Pennsylvania. When applying to UPenn, one must apply specifically to one of their schools: either Arts & Sciences, Nursing, Business, or Engineering. The name of Penn's business school is Wharton. The name comes up a lot because Wharton is perennially ranked the #1 undergrad business school, and is probably more highly selective than UPenn's engineering or arts/sciences school. (Nursing may be more selective because it accepts so few students)

bang out a 2300, lie about an activity or two, and you'll be set at most.

bump .

bump 2

Wharton is so hard to get in... seriously my friend had 2300 SATs, national merit semi-finalist, violin for 13+ years, club and varsity volleyball captain, and all this other stuff and she was waitlisted... and she applied from Virginia... but she did get off the waitlist... I was rejected from Wharton after being defered... I did get into Duke, Georgetown, Northwestern, UVA echols, and others I can't remember now... and to respond to a previous post... Georgetown's undergraduate business program is ranked 11th according to Businessweek, but I got to tell you as far as Wall Street recruitment and representation goes... Georgetown is right behind HPYS and Wharton... just ask some Wall Street recruiters, NOT high school kids...

Do you live in Hoboken? I think you have really good shots at all these schools.
