Chances @ Penn, William & Mary, NYU, Cornell...

I'm a junior now and want to know my chances at U Penn, W&M, Cornell, and NYU with what I have so far. My freshman year grades weren't hot but it was due to personal problems that will be explained to admissions. Also, it is my first year in public school. The year before I was homeschooled and the year before THAT I was in a crappy parochial school.

STATS:
SAT: 1450
GPA: 3.8 unweighted, 4.5 weighted
Rank: My school doesn't rank
APs/college credits: AP American Civics & Government only this year because APs mostly need prereqs and it's my first year so I didn't fulfill everything...
*3 college courses this summer @ Villanova U and 4-5 APs planned for senior year.
*I'm in all honors EXCEPT for math. I don't even know how I got the 700 on my SAT.
ECs:
SADD, Best Buddies, Art Club, Feed the Children, Pen & Ink (lit newspaper), Writer's Guild - I'm still joining clubs, there are so many! I am NOT an athlete.
*I know my essay will be more than fine because I love to write and have a passion for it. Recs will also be good because there are some teachers who really, really like me.

...so be honest. If the essay is good and the recs are good and I get As and maybe ONE B, how do I look?

Ohhhh, I forgot to mention that I also have done 250 hours of community service and still am. I also work a job 15 hours a week...

Well, my guidance counselor said I'm probably in, though it's my reach. So I'm happy.

You have great chances at william and mary, cornell early decision and prob reg decision, nyu early decision (reg is exceedingly unpreditable sometimes), upenn 85%? (simple because upenn's decisions were quite awkward this year for early decision, with plenty of people being deferred/rejected that should have been given a better chance).

=)

OMG, you made me sooo happy! Thank you!
Yes, UPenn's decisions were very awkward. This kid in my Econ class was rejected EA for UPenn - really nice guy - I wanted him to get in! His senior schedule had 4-5 APs on it and he scored over a 700 in math for the SAT. His Verbal was low, though. I know writing in English wasn't his best thing...he's from South Korea.

"His Verbal was low, though. "

that doesn't seem like an awkward decision to me.

kids with low SATS don't get into ivies. Its not awkward, its just the way it is.

Some do. I know a 1270 who got into UPenn. I guess I just thought that he, the guy in my Econ class, had so many good qualities and great grades that he'd get in or at least be waitlisted. Well, he's going to either UVA or BU instead...both very good schools.

yeah im 1450 and i got rejected from Penn and deferred from Chicago. Pick a lot of match schools.

I'm only a junior...so even though I got a 1450, I may retake that SAT for something close to a 1500. It's just hard to say how admissions works. It's actually sorta scary.

I can't think of a safety school because Temple was going to be it and I visited it and did not like it.

dont rely solely on test scores or GPA, it simply isnt enough.

Def...I know plenty of high scorers that got deferred/rejected by Penn...Penn, I think, looks for their "kind" of kid. They tend to go for the social/outgoing/popular kids in HS, that knows how to work hard and play hard.

I guess, that would make sense since they didn't really take anyone from my high school which is specialized and pretty nerdy.

I know that scores and GPA aren't everything. I feel like I'm good in the other areas that count too.

er... messed up this post
