Hi guys I was wondering if you guys could chance me. I go to a magnet high school with all honors and AP classes.

African American
UW GPA: 3.7
Sat: 2260 (M 800, CR 750, W 710)
Junior Year course load: AP Physics, honors chemistry, honors pre calculus honors, honors history, honors world literature.
Expected Senior course load: AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB, AP History, AP Bio, AP Stats

Extracurriculars:
Internship at UBS (wealth management)
Member of FBLA, TSA, Model UN
100 hours volunteering with Habitat for Humanity

No Awards

Chances for many top colleges such as
Northwestern
U Chicago
Mit
Harvard
Princeton
Yale
Stanford
Duke
Columbia
Cornell

I plan on majoring in engineering. I am planning to apply to a safety school (my state university) and a few other schools that have high rate of admission. Thank you for the chances.

Your URM status will help considerably. However, other than your internship, your extra curriculums don’t stand out and you have no leadership positions , which Wharton looks for. However, you academic stats are top notch and you have great math scores. If you want to go into engineering , why Wharton and Stern

HYSPM + Wharton - mid reach ( like everyone else)
Chicago, Columbia- low to mid reach
Northwestern Duke Stern- high match to low reach

My goal is investment banking and they seem to like engineers due to their quantitative skills. If I can’t make it into investment banking i would become an engineer, but if I were to get into Wharton I would not major in engineering.

Your UW GPA is okay, you go to a magnet high school so obviously everyone is taking challenging courses. Your ECs are okay (leadership?), but you don’t have a ton. I would say to just really show passion in something, get killer recs, and make sure your essay is memorable. I would say that:
HYPSM + Columbia + Wharton + UChicago: high reach
Cornell, NW: middle reach
Duke, NYU Stern: low reach

Northwestern (Low Reach)
U Chicago (Low Reach)
Mit (Reach)
Harvard (Reach)
Princeton (Reach)
Yale (Reach)
Stanford (Reach)
Duke (Reach)
Columbia (Low Reach)
Cornell (Low Reach)
NYU (Match)

Really I’m not trying to be racist here, but the fact that you’re African American definitely helps. By that, I am talking about the affirmative action laws in place. You have solid stats though.

I would suggest either skipping HYPS, MIT and Columbia… or just reaching for 1-2… and I would consider adding Vanderbilt, Brown, Rice and Johns Hopkins to the schools you consider + 1-2 Safeties or Rolling Admissions so you can have a couple solid admits in the bag before you role the dice on the others. You Match with Cornell and NYU… and Penn, Duke, NW are low reaches. UChicago may depend on your essays and how you distinguish yourself.

Being an URM clearly helps, but it is your UW GPA that is the drawback for the most elite schools, unless you were also a QuestBridge Finalist or the equivalent. You did not mention your families financial situation, but if you do happen to qualify for QB, that could change everything… and you could potentially match with even the greatest reaches.

I don’t think Cornell NYU are matches at all. Yes you’re URM but your GPA is low for schools as selective as HYPS and your ECs are bland, and the fact that you have 0 awards hurts you. Your SAT is good but it’s not high for those schools. I don’t think your URM status will save you. Your entire list is high reach minus Cornell is reach. You need to look for other, less selective colleges.
