-I am a white, male, Irish Catholic from Pennsylvania- Only boy out of six kids
-Political Science is my intended major
-SAT I (760m, 690cr, 790w)
-SAT II's All solid but nothing too spectacular
-Weighted GPA- 4.1; Unweighted- 3.7
-No exact class rank, but done by deciles- Ranked in second decile but in reality I am in the top fifteen percent at my school
-My public high school is currently ranked number one in the Pensylvania State Standardized Assesment testing- The school is very competitive
-I have taken five of the thirteen Advanced Placement courses my school offers and I have also taken many others honors classes
-Hook: Neither of my parents went to college (thats all I have)
-Essay: I was happy with it and I wrote it specifically for this university
-Recomendations: From what I have been told they were very good
-ECs: Three year varsity baseball player; FBLA(bussiness club- Vice President) three years and have won several awards from this activity; Class Representative and on student congress committee; Active on an AAU national champion baseball team(not recruited by the Irish), National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society
-I have done a sizable amount of community service and have good work expperience for my Father's masonry company
-I applied early action to both Notre Dame and Boston College- I was accepted at BC but deffered at ND- very dissapointing
-Now I plan on sending in my midyear grades along with a better description of my activities and I will also include that I played three years of recreational basketball, was named captain for baseball, and joined my churches youth group
- Now there will be one very strong candidate now applying from my school who was deffered early decision at Princeton
- Ultimately I think it was my class rank and ec's that got me deffered
- I know I wrote a lot but I would appreciate any comments Notre Dame is my dream school, please be honest

By the way I know I spelled hopeful wrong but it was the only way to get the name I wanted.

Since you got deferred I think ND has pretty much told you what you need to know... you are very very close and very much on the bubble. Keep working hard and send them more info so that they are up to date.

If you are deferred it means that they don't know enough about the whole applicant pool yet but they feel you can be competitive, which is a good sign and it certainly means you have a shot. Once again, however, you are very much on the bubble so keep working hard. I think that your class rank is the killer right now so work hard on getting the grades up as much as you can from here on out. You definately have a shot, however!

Good luck!

I have #1 in class, lots of AP courses, 31 ACT, and strong extra curriculars, but I got deferred. Do I have a good shot at regular action?

Overall I still think you have a good shot and I would have said you have a very good shot before I heard that you are deferred. The fact that you were deferred though is troubling because it means it is going to be close, but you definately have a chance. Send them anything that will make you stand out (within reason) because you are close and it may be something small that makes the difference. Good luck but I do think you have a good shot in the regular pool

irish68178, thank you for your response it was greatly appreciated. Anyone else who would like to opine is more than welcome. I also have another question, I was thinking about sending in a more descriptive activities list and the copy of a speech I wrote and gave for a local contest. I think the activities list would help the committee understand my extracurriculars better and it is done in a tasteful manner. The speech I think could serve as supplemenatry material like an artist who sends in a portfolio. The speech is very well written, and could possibly help me. Does anyone think this is a bad idea?

If you think it would help them understand you then I don't see a reason not to do it, but that is just my opinion.

just an observation....how about not hijacking the thread to worry about yourself, start your own one shivers....

Now as to your original question NDHopefull6, I think I have to echo what has been articulated by irish already. Sounds like your fate is up in the air until march or so. I don't like to say you're on the bubble, because who knows as to whether that is true or not, although it is an apt description.

I would definitely send mid-year grades. I'm surprised you're having to do this on your own initiative. My high school automatically sent them out to the schools one applied to, since most colleges DO want to see how you're doing in senior year. These grades are gonna be really important because they'll show whether you're on the "senior slide" or still really working hard....

If your school really is that competitive and doing so well on the state test, I would imagine that ND might be aware of that. This being said, like irish said you definitely want to do as much as you can to show your interest in the school and how you are still working hard...

Do you go to NASH ndhopeful?

No, I do not go to NASH DJZahren.

Nemo thank you for your response, I appreciate your input. As far as the mid-year grade report, it is up to me to get my counselors to fill them out and send them in. They won't do that on their own. My senior grades should be solid, not perfect, but it really won't help or hurt my rank no matter what. Today, I did send in the speech I previously mentioned and a revised activities list. I also included a very brief ( two paragragh) cover letter explaining them and my love of the University. I am really hoping that the committee realizes how much I want Notre Dame and ultimately accepts me in regular decision.

Just for the record, I sent the speech because it is a good reflection of both my writing ability and my personality. So I hope they consider it and approve of its message.

I also found out something that could have hurt my chances of getting in early action. A girl from my school who I did not realizes was applying got accepted. She is very deserving and I understand her acceptance, but my thinking is that this could affect my chances during the regular decision as well. Are there any thoughts on this?

I don't think ND operates on a quota per school....in my class of about 60, there were eleven who applied to ND. Out of those eleven, there were two who were denied in the EA process, four who were accepted. The other five applied regular decision and I think four made it in... All in all there were five people from my school who went my year to ND, so don't worry so much if they've already taken one girl from your school...they will look at you and your record...
