chances? please help

Hi guys i was wondering if any of you could help me out in determining my chances of getting into UW - Seattle

I am a white female from an small, affluent town in New Jersey about 20 minutes from New York City
my gpa is a 2.99
my sat scores are:
math:620
critical reading: 640
writing: 650

I'm taking challenging classes senior year
I have a fair amount of volunteer work

please be honest!
thanks so much

From the information you posted, I don’t think you have a good chance. The gpa is not very good unless you come from a prestigious high school where grade point averages aren’t inflated like they are in public schools (in which case, UW will evaluate your gpa as such). UW only looks at critical reading and math sat scores, so that gives you a 1260 / 1600, which is alright, but not exactly a point in your favor. If you do indeed have challenging courses senior year, that will help show ambition. Hopefully you also took a challenging schedule junior year and earlier. Volunteer work is obviously a plus as well.

Other things that might help: do you have an upward grade trend? significant extracurricular activities aside from the volunteer work? Also, if you’re a good writer, a good/great essay will go a long ways especially since your gpa and sat scores aren’t very impressive.

Not a no, but hopefully you have other good things to offer on your application, and a well written essay will also boost your chances.

Well your SAT scores are fine but UW-Seattle does not list them as “very important”. One thing that they look heavily upon is your GPA. The fact that your GPA is 2.99 (average is 3.72) and that you are out-of-state (about 80% of UW-Seattle is made up of in-state students) won’t work in your favor. Unless you can explain why you have a low GPA or you have some very meaningful extracurricular activities and essay I think it will be tough for you to get in.

thanks for your honesty i appreciate it.
do you think university of oregon would be a better bet?

Yes it would be.

I agree- Oregon is easier to get into than UW, and honestly I love the atmosphere in Eugene. I would still apply to UW, just recognize that it might be a reach school for you.

Yes, University of Oregon should accept you. I think 3.4 is automatic admission. a 3.0 with 1260 sat should be sufficient. As for UW…I don’t think so. Average gpa is like 3.7 or something. But you never know. You didn’t give too much information so it’s hard to make an accurate guess.
