chances, please, i'm so nervous i can't sleep

it's 4:30 in the morning right now and that's how it's been for a while. i'm applying to urochester for fall 08 admission and i want to go there so badly, i can't stand it. i screwed myself over with fall 06 with 2.69. i had a 3.44 spring 07. i'm a sophomore at rutgers university right now. fall 07, i had a 3.5, which brings my cum gpa to a 3.244. i'm hoping to pull a 4.0 this coming semester, which will bring my gpa up to a 3.4 or so. i got a 2210 on sats. i work as a research assistant, music teacher, sunday school teacher, i interned over the summer. do i have a shot at urochester or am i just setting myself up for disappointment? i'd like to know sooner rather than later so that i won't be too crushed if i'm rejected.

i'm going to apply to barnard as well, but i'm not really planning on going if i get in. i like rutgers fine, but rochester is my top choice and this is my last chance. </p>

so chances on barnard or rochester?

thanks.

…bump…

Hey sweetie, I don’t have an answer for you but I’m a freshman applying to transfer to UR from with only a 3.37 for my first semester, but pretty good EC’s, which you have too.
Your SAT’s are fantastic, so they’re definitely going to see that you have raw talent and ability, and you have an upward progression, which is important. What’s your major?

Well, U of Roch does like to see about a 3.5 to 3.6 college GPA average–and like you said, your Fall 2006 did screw you over a bit. Fortunately, the trend is upwards since–so maybe the question is–Did something in particular affect your grades that semester?–or was it just a matter of going to Rutgers when you expected to go somewhere else with your 2210 SAT.

Personally, if it’s the latter, I’d write about this in my essay–Something like “I was disappointed and didn’t handle it well, but have since realized that it was important for me to do my best at Rutgers–which I have done in the semesters since that first one”.–and then expand on it. This seems to be the case–and Univ of Rochester might consider your learning experience, throw out the first semester (or discount it)–and give you a chance.

As far as Barnard–I’d skip it–you need about a 3.7 to 3.8 college GPA–and you don’t have that in any of your semesters–so even with the essay I mentioned, they are unlikely to give you a break.

Good luck.

thanks so much for your replies. yeah, first semester…i was just so disillusioned and kind of disappointed in myself. and i wasn’t accustomed to all the freedom that i suddenly had and kind of just let myself go. obviously i want to kill myself now. i know that my chances for barnard are slim to none, but i don’t want to go there anyhow. i’m only doing it because my parents want me to at least try. even if i get in (which is super unlikely), i doubt i’ll go. i’m a history major and i have a 4.0 in all my history classes, although i don’t know how much they’ll care about that.

i’m going in for an interview on the 20th during my spring break…hopefully it will go well. i’ve spoken to the transfer admissions office numerous times and they keep getting my hopes up because they’re so cheerful about my gpa - although i don’t understand it at all! rochester sent me an e-mail saying that they have started reviewing applicants and i’m thinking maybe i should just send in my complete application now instead of waiting for my spring grades. i don’t want them to fill up all the spots.

thanks again, for all your help. =]
