CHANCES? Please post - BC, UNC, BU, IU

I am going to be a senior next year and I am planning on applying to roughly 7-8 schools. I wanted to get some feedback as to what my chances are for getting into these schools.

28 ACT

1840 SAT

3.87 GPA (unweighted)

4.81 GPA (weighted)

I have taken many honors classes and recently took 2 AP tests, scores will be ready in July

I have volunteered frequently at the local nature center and at a boys and girls club.

Clubs:
- 3 years of Model UN (lettered)
- 3 years of key club
- I am the treasurer of key club (2 years)
- Co-Founder and Co-President of Table Tennis Club
- 2 years of S.W.A.T.S. (Students with an attitude towards success)

Sports:
- Varsity Tennis player since 8th grade (lettered)

The colleges I am looking into applying are:
- Boston College
- Boston University
- UNC
- Indiana University
- University of Minnesota
- University of Wisconsin
- Notre Dame
- Wash. U

I understand Wash U and notre dame will be reaches but please provide feedback as to if it is possible to become admitted or if it is a waste of money to apply. I appreciate all comments so please give me my chances and I will chance back!

As you probably know you have a very strong UW GPA but your standardized test scores are on the low-end (at or below the 25th-%tile) for a number of your schools. What is your state of residence? That will affect your chances at the state flagships (for example while your test score are are about 40th%-tile for UNC the prevailing feeling is that for OOS applicants your scores need to be near the upper-end for a strong chance of admission).

My guesses

Notre Dame - Big Reach
Wash U - Big Reach
Boston College - Reach
UNC - Reach if OOS
Indiana - Safety
Minnesota Safety/Match
Wisconsin Safety/Match www.education.wisc.edu/cap/UW_FreshmanExpectations.pdf
BU - Match

It’s impossible for us to say what’s a waste of time/money for you. My gut feeling is to apply to 2 out of BC, ND, WashU and UNC. I personally think WashU is the longest shot on your list but you never know with a rigorous course-load and a 3.87 UWGPA. Depending on what area you plan on studying with also affect your chances and any recommendations others can make.

Thank you so much, I am a resident of Minnesota and I have heard the exact same thing about UNC. Although I still want to apply there just to see. I want to major in business and maybe accounting or finance, specifically. I want to apply to BC but if I chose either ND or Wash U as another reach, are there any other top notch business schools that I have a good shot at? I appreciate your help!

I do have a quick question. How do you have a 4.81 Weighted if u have only taken 2 APs? Does ur school give honors more “weight”?
Any ways, I feel that u have a solid chance except for Notre Dame (and I dont really know much about Wash U…). But, if I were u, I would just apply for the heck of it =)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1162646-not-really-chance-thread-where-should-i-applying.html</a></p>

Your SAT/ACT scores are the confusing part. With a 3.87 UW GPA most people would guess you’d put up numbers closer to 2000/30. So a school is going to either assume you had a bad day or your high school prep wasn’t as rigorous as it should be. How many times have you taken the SAT or ACT? You may want to consider taking them one more time. Notre Dame, Wash U, BC and UNC have plenty of 3.8 applicants who also have 2000+ SATs; you need to get stronger on that front if you want to compete there.

Here’s my bluntly honest opinion, its not meant to be mean, it’s meant to be helpful. And its only my opinion so who knows if I’m right or not. Heres what I think:
(All of this is assuming you don’t raise your test scores)

I’d say that Notre Dame, UNC(if you are out of state UNC is almost low Ivy rigor in terms of getting in, by law 82% have to come from NC, its the hardest OOS school in the country), and Wash U. would be wastes of money to apply to. Your GPA is good for these schools, but it’s not outstanding, aka it won’t compensate for your test scores. I don’t think you have a chance at any of these three.

Indiana is a safety for you.

Minnesota would be a high match/low safety
Boston University would be a high match
Wisconsin would be a match(I’m not sure if you get in-state for wisconsin because you live in MN, if you do its a high match)
Boston College would probably be a reach, but not by any means impossible, maybe more towards a low match. I’d give you 50-50.

Strength(s): GPA, rigor of course work (I assume)
Weakness(es): none, though the test scores are low for some of these schools

Note: I’m scrutinizing your activities in the most critical way. Most colleges on your list will not be as “harsh” as I am.

Extra-curricular activities I like:

 • Model UN
 • Varsity Tennis

Extra-curricular activities I’m indifferent to (and why):

 • Key Club (treasurer). So you have an official position. Great. What do you do with it?
 • Table Tennis Club. You’ve co-founded this club, and now you’re co-president. Cool. I actually like this activity, but because I don’t know the details and tasks of this activity, it’s hard to impress me with it.
 • S.W.A.T.S. - what is this? I’m sure some of the officers will know, but it wouldn’t hurt to write a quick one-liner about what this program is.

Comments:
Your standardized test scores will be on the low side for the following colleges: Boston College, Boston University (maybe, but I don’t have the middle 50% at hand), UNC (OOS), Notre Dame, WashU. You should fit in nicely at the other universities in terms of scores.

Because of your consistently high performance in high school, your recommendations should be great. Also, I have no doubt your essays will be stellar as well. It’s all about starting early. And you’re a highly accomplished tennis player, so some colleges might recruit you (I don’t know if any of these schools do).

Here are the results if I were to look at your application at the present moment, without essay, recommendations, and other factors.

Boston College: possible (an either way situation).
Boston University: possible to likely.
UNC: reach.
Indiana University: likely.
University of Minnesota: likely.
University of Wisconsin: likely.
Notre Dame: not likely.
WashU: reach.

Thank you for all of the feedback. I just took the ACT this past June and have a chance at a 29 or 30 but the science was really tough so I don’t expect a huge change.
Raza68 - My honors and AP classes count as the same weight at my high school. I have only taken 2 AP tests but have taken almost all honors or ap classes and always do honors options when possible.

It seems to me that you guys are right on and that is about where I thought I would be at. But if I want to go into business what are some good reach schools? I know that the state schools are pretty much matches/safetys but after that the rigor jumps up pretty fast. I think BC is a good to apply to because it is possible but for sure not a match. Any other tips or recommendations on business schools would be great! Thanks for commenting

USC’s Marshall School seems to be a viable option. But it depends. Do you want to go to a big school in SoCal?

I was looking at USC as an option but I do not know much about it. Does it have finance and accounting majors and everything cause I know UCLA only has an Econ major. I also would consider UC Berkeley, how do those Cal schools match up with my stats? Better than ND or Wash U?

UC Berkeley is incredibly competitive for OOS, but if you have the dough, it’s more likely to accept you. ^_^

USC is a large school, similar to UCLA. Here’s a link that might be useful to you: [Finance & Business Economics | Finance and Business Economics | USC Marshall School of Business](<a href=“Home - USC Marshall”>Home - USC Marshall) Because of its size, I would think that USC has some sort of an accounting major.

I don’t know if your chances are better at Cal and USC than they are at ND and WashU, but the weather is certainly better in California. :-)

Reach for BC, ND, WashU and UNC. Maybe for Wisconsin and BU. In at Minnesota and Indiana. Best of luck!

Might look at Holy Cross-great liberal arts school with strong accounting program. HC like ND has one of the better business alumni networks and the Holy Cross campus is 1 hour from Boston.

Oh ok thanks Par72, that is good to know. If I happened to get into one or both of the Boston School’s I may take a trip out next spring break and I could see Holy Cross then, assuming I decide to apply to it! Any other B-school recommendations or chances are much appreciated!

Suggest looking into University of Michigan as well as Holy Cross. Michigan is very highly regarded for most fields of study.
